Every fluent reader was once a beginner who had no idea what those strange shapes on a page meant. Before a child can make sense of a sentence, a paragraph, or a story, they need to crack what researchers call the alphabetic code – the fundamental understanding that written letters map to spoken sounds. This first stage of the reading process, often called elementary reading, is where that journey begins. It covers three interconnected areas: learning letter-sound relationships, building early vocabulary through simple texts, and getting the right support from tutors and instructors who understand that no two beginners are exactly alike.

At the heart of elementary reading is a deceptively simple idea: every letter (or group of letters) in the alphabet represents a specific sound. Phonics instruction teaches this relationship directly, helping children understand that there is an organized and predictable connection between written letters and the sounds of spoken language. The technical term for this is grapheme-phoneme correspondence – graphemes are the written letters or letter combinations, and phonemes are the individual sounds they represent.
This matters because reading is not guessing. When a beginning reader sees the word dog, the goal is not to look at the picture next to it or use context to figure out the word – it’s to decode each letter sound and blend them together. Sound-to-letter correspondence refers to recognizing and associating sounds with letters and then making those associations with printed words. Without this skill firmly in place, children tend to guess rather than decode, which limits their growth significantly.
How letter-sound instruction is sequenced
One of the most common questions tutors ask is: which letters do you teach first? Research points to a clear principle – begin with letter-sound relationships of high utility, such as the sounds for m, a, and s, so that students can start working with actual words as quickly as possible. Early momentum matters for confidence.
Equally important is what not to do too early: avoid introducing letters that look or sound similar at the same time. Letters that are visually similar – like b and d – or sounds that are auditorily close – like short e and short i – should be separated, with the first one practiced to a point of automaticity before the second is introduced. Automaticity here means the student no longer has to think about the sound – it comes instantly. That level of fluency is the target, because a reader still searching for letter-sound pairings uses up mental energy that should be going toward comprehension.
A key insight from structured literacy research is that beginners do not need to master every letter of the alphabet before they can start reading. Reading can begin with as few as five sounds – for example, s, a, t, i, m – as long as instruction proceeds incrementally, with previously taught sounds revisited at every new stage. This cumulative approach ensures that no skill is learned in isolation and then forgotten.
Teaching phonemes versus letter names
There’s an important distinction often overlooked in early reading instruction: teaching letter sounds is not the same as teaching letter names. The name “double-u” gives a child no useful information about how to pronounce the letter w in a word. The phonics approach directly links letters (graphemes) to sounds (phonemes), teaching children pure sounds – like ah, b, k – rather than letter names. This makes blending words far more intuitive for young readers.
Multi-sensory techniques strengthen this learning considerably. Integrating visual cues such as pictures or gestures can significantly reinforce the process of learning letter sounds – for example, pairing the letter A with an image of an alligator to anchor the short /a/ sound in memory. Tactile activities, such as forming letters from clay or tracing them in sand, add another layer of encoding that purely visual instruction misses.
Building vocabulary through simple texts
Once a beginner has a small but solid set of letter-sound correspondences, the next critical step is putting those skills to work in actual reading. This is where decodable texts come in – and they are far more purposeful than they might appear.
Decodable books are written specifically for beginning readers and contain only the grapheme-phoneme correspondences the student has already been taught. Unlike general children’s books or leveled readers, they are constructed so that the reader can actually sound out most of the words rather than relying on pictures, pattern repetition, or guessing. This is a crucial distinction: the type of text a beginner practices with shapes their “reading reflex” – whether they instinctively reach for phonics knowledge or for context clues when they meet an unknown word.
Why controlled vocabulary builds confidence
Decodable books are sequential by design – from easiest to most advanced – helping children build essential literacy skills in a way that aligns with the science of reading. Early books typically focus on simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words like hat, sit, and cub. As the reader’s phonics knowledge grows, the texts introduce digraphs (like ch and sh), blends, long vowel patterns, and eventually more complex structures.
A common concern about decodable books is that their simple storylines make them unengaging. But research challenges this assumption directly. In a study by Capper (2013), children reported enjoying decodable books and saw them as a source of exciting stories that developed their reading confidence through practicing their skills. Simplicity in decoding demands does not have to mean simplicity in storytelling. Well-designed decodable series now include genuine narrative arcs, humor, and knowledge-building content across science and social studies topics.
Reading expert Louisa Moats notes that laborious sounding out is a stepping stone, not the destination – the goal is for students to eventually read words as wholes, but that automaticity only develops through extensive, accurate practice with decodable text. Beginners also benefit from hearing high-quality children’s literature read aloud to them daily. This parallel track – decodable texts for practice, richer read-alouds for vocabulary and language exposure – together builds a much stronger literacy foundation than either approach alone.
High-frequency words alongside phonics texts
Decodable books also introduce a small number of high-frequency words – common words like the, said, or was that appear constantly in print but cannot yet be fully decoded with the phonics rules a beginner knows. These are often called “tricky words” in structured literacy programs. These tricky words are common and useful for early reading and writing, but children won’t yet be able to decode them following the phonics rules taught up to that point – so they need to be explicitly taught and practiced separately, often through repeated reading and writing.
As a child’s phonics knowledge expands, more and more formerly “tricky” words become fully decodable, reducing the memory burden and accelerating reading fluency. This is why it is critical that vocabulary in practice texts expands systematically as the student’s alphabetic knowledge grows, rather than jumping ahead to words that exceed their current decoding skills.
Tips for tutors and instructors
Supporting a beginner reader is not a one-size-fits-all task. Children come to reading with vastly different backgrounds – different amounts of pre-school exposure to books, different home languages, different learning profiles, and different emotional associations with academic tasks. Effective tutors account for all of these factors.
Start with assessment, not assumption
Before designing any instruction, a tutor needs to know where the student actually is. Differentiated instruction is based on the premise that instructional approaches should vary and be adapted in relation to individual and diverse students – and this begins with using diagnostic assessments to determine student readiness. Diagnostic assessments do not need to be formal standardized tests; a simple, one-on-one phonics screen that asks the student to identify letter sounds or blend simple words provides clear, actionable data.
From that baseline, instruction is matched to the student’s actual skill level – not their grade, not their age, not what their peers are doing. Research evidence recommends that instructors provide differentiated instruction in small groups or one-on-one settings to better meet the needs of individual students wherever they are in their reading journeys. For tutors working individually with students, this one-on-one model is already in place – the task is simply to use it well.
Account for linguistic and cultural background
For students learning English as an additional language, or for those from homes where literacy practices differ from school-based expectations, instruction needs to account for what they bring to the table – not just what they lack. The more a tutor can learn about each student’s background, the better prepared they are to provide appropriate instruction for that student. This includes knowing which language sounds the student is already familiar with, which letter-sound correspondences may conflict with their home language’s patterns, and what prior experiences with text they may have had.
Importantly, content should not be watered down for students who are still developing English language skills. The expectation of literacy and the rigor of phonics instruction remains the same; what changes is the approach and the scaffolding used to make that content accessible.
Make instruction explicit, cumulative, and multisensory
The best elementary reading instruction shares three qualities: it is explicit (the tutor names and explains what is being taught, rather than hoping the student infers it), cumulative (each new skill builds on and revisits previous ones), and multisensory (students hear, see, say, and physically engage with the material).
Scaffolding instruction by giving clear explicit explanations with visuals is especially effective for struggling readers. Visual anchor charts displaying letter-sound correspondences, physical letter tiles, and even kinesthetic movements tied to specific phonemes all increase the likelihood that a student encodes and retains new learning. Discussions of reading instruction that focus on only one component at a time – decoding, comprehension, fluency – rather than thinking about how all the pieces fit together can lead to lopsided instruction, so tutors should always keep the bigger picture in view even when drilling a specific skill.
Prioritize progress monitoring and flexibility
A tutor’s job does not end after delivering a lesson – it continues in tracking whether the instruction is actually working. A primary principle of structured literacy is to be diagnostic and responsive. If a student is not progressing with a particular approach, the tutor adjusts – trying a different sequence, a different modality, or breaking a skill into even smaller steps. Progress monitoring does not require formal tools; careful observation during reading sessions, noting which words are decoded automatically versus with struggle, tells a skilled tutor everything they need to know to adjust the next lesson.
Equally important is maintaining high expectations throughout. The goal is not to simplify what a beginner is learning – it is to make the path to that learning navigable. Every child who can hear and produce the sounds of their spoken language has the foundation needed to learn to read. The tutor’s role is to build the bridge between what the student already knows and where they need to go.
