Most students open a textbook, read from start to finish, and then wonder why so little sticks by exam time. The problem usually isn’t the material – it’s the method. Study reading is a fundamentally different process from casual reading. It’s active, deliberate, and built around specific strategies that force your brain to engage with the text rather than just pass over it. The four strategies below – text marking, question writing, using graphics, and summarizing – each address a different stage of that process. Used together, they can significantly change how much you understand and retain.

Text marking techniques: how to annotate a text effectively
Annotating is any deliberate interaction with a text that enhances your understanding, recall, and response to it. It goes well beyond simply running a highlighter over sentences. Done properly, text marking is a conversation between you and the material – and it starts before you pick up a pen.
Read first, mark second
One of the most common mistakes readers make is marking as they go, which leads to over-highlighting entire paragraphs. Effective text marking starts with reading the complete section or paragraph first. Once you have a sense of what the passage is saying, you can make informed decisions about what actually deserves to be marked. A good rule of thumb: aim to highlight or underline no more than one-third of any given paragraph. Any more than that, and you’re essentially re-reading the whole text when you review.
Underline, circle, and annotate with purpose
Marking texts purposefully means you’re actively making meaning, not just decorating the page. Here’s a practical system to follow:
- Underline the main claim or thesis – typically one or two sentences per section.
- Circle key terms and specialized vocabulary – these are the words you need to understand the subject and recall for tests.
- Use margin notes – write brief paraphrases of important sentences in your own words. This is the most valuable habit because it forces you to process the idea rather than just flag it.
- Number ideas in a series – if a paragraph lists causes, effects, or steps, number them in the margin so you can see the structure at a glance.
- Develop a symbol system – Harvard Library’s reading guides recommend using symbols such as an asterisk (*) for key ideas or an exclamation mark (!) for surprising information. Your own consistent legend makes reviewing faster.
Research from as far back as 1987 reinforces a consistent principle: annotate or paraphrase during reading, and underline after. This sequence ensures you understand before you mark, rather than marking in the hope of understanding later. And critically, the goal is synthesis – putting ideas into your own words – because that’s the point at which comprehension actually occurs.
One important caveat flagged by educational researchers: passive highlighting alone can actually impair long-term retention. When students highlight without thinking deeply, they create what researchers call an “illusion of knowledge” – a feeling of having absorbed material that hasn’t actually been processed. Highlighting is the beginning of the process, not the end. It must be paired with the annotation and paraphrasing described above to be genuinely effective.
Writing questions to enhance understanding
One of the most powerful – and most underused – study strategies is generating your own questions as you read. It sounds simple, but the research behind it is substantial.
Why question generation works
Significant evidence shows that learning to generate questions while reading improves memory, the ability to identify main ideas, and overall comprehension (Rosenshine et al., 1996; National Reading Panel, 2000; Trabasso & Bouchard, 2002). When you have a question in mind, you read with purpose – you’re actively searching for an answer rather than passively scanning words. This engaged mode of reading produces much stronger encoding of information in memory.
Turning headings into questions: the SQ3R approach
A structured way to use this strategy is through the SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review), developed by Francis P. Robinson. The “Question” step is simple but effective: before reading any section, convert its heading into a question. For example, a heading that reads “The Hawthorne Effect” becomes “What is the Hawthorne Effect?” You now have a specific reason to read the section, and your brain is primed to recognize the answer when you encounter it.
The SQ3R framework recommends glancing through headings, highlighted vocabulary, introductory and summary paragraphs, and diagrams before reading. From those, you write down several questions you expect the text to answer. You then read actively in search of those answers, recite answers out loud when you find them, and review the material by writing down your final answers after reading. This cycle turns reading into a series of purposeful transactions between you and the text.
Levels of questions matter
Not all questions are equally useful. Students who generate questions learn to ask themselves things that require combining information from different parts of the text, not just simple factual recall. Using Bloom’s Taxonomy as a guide, aim to mix lower-level questions (What is X? When did Y happen?) with higher-level ones (Why does this matter? How does this relate to what I already know?). Higher-order questions push you into deeper comprehension territory – and that depth is exactly what makes information stick.
Using graphics to connect ideas
Some information is genuinely hard to hold in your head as a linear sequence of sentences. Relationships between concepts, cause-and-effect chains, comparisons between two ideas – these are far easier to understand and recall when you can see them laid out spatially. That’s exactly what graphic organizers provide.
What graphic organizers do for your brain
Graphic organizers – which include concept maps, Venn diagrams, flowcharts, story maps, and timelines – are visual tools that help you organize and understand information by making relationships between concepts visible. Research grounded in Dual Coding Theory explains why they work: combining verbal information with visual representations strengthens both understanding and memory because the brain processes information through two channels simultaneously – linguistic and visual. When both channels are engaged, the material is encoded more deeply.
A 2025 meta-analysis published in Educational Psychology Review found that learner-generated graphic organizers produced an average effect size of g+ = 0.59 for memory outcomes – a meaningful improvement – while also significantly enhancing transfer of knowledge. In practical terms, this means that drawing your own diagram or concept map while reading produces better outcomes than simply reading the same material twice.
Choosing the right type of organizer
Different organizers suit different types of content. The most common types and their best uses are:
- Venn diagrams – for comparing and contrasting two or more concepts, showing overlapping and distinct characteristics.
- Flowcharts – for sequential processes, steps in a procedure, or cause-and-effect relationships.
- Concept maps / mind maps – for organizing complex topics around a central idea, with branches showing how subtopics and details relate to the core concept.
- Timelines – for placing events or developments in chronological order.
- Cause-and-effect charts – for texts that explain why events happen or what consequences follow from a central issue.
The key principle, as research in educational practice confirms, is active construction. When you build the organizer yourself – rather than just studying a pre-made diagram – you’re forced to identify relationships and make decisions about how concepts connect. That cognitive effort is precisely what produces deeper learning.
Summarizing for memory retention
If you only adopt one strategy from this post, make it this one. Summarizing is consistently ranked among the most effective study techniques in educational research, and for good reason: it requires you to do everything else well – understand the text, identify what matters, filter out what doesn’t, and then restate the core ideas in your own words.
Why summarizing is so effective
Teaching yourself to summarize improves your memory for what you read and functions as an automatic comprehension check. If you can’t summarize a paragraph in your own words, that’s a signal you haven’t fully understood it – which is far better to discover during study than during an exam. When you rephrase information in a summary, you move it into long-term memory, making it easier to recall later. According to research by educational psychologist Robert J. Marzano, summarizing strategies increase a student’s ability to understand content by an average of 19 percent.
How to summarize at the paragraph level
Summarizing begins at the smallest unit: the paragraph. A practical step-by-step process for paragraph-level summarization looks like this:
- Read the paragraph completely.
- Identify the main idea – the central point the paragraph is making.
- Distinguish main ideas from supporting details – details illustrate or support the main idea, but they are not the main idea itself.
- Write the main idea in your own words as a brief phrase or single sentence in the margin. This is your paragraph keyword or micro-summary.
- Move to the next paragraph and repeat.
The Graduate Student Resource Center at UC Riverside recommends writing one or two keywords next to each paragraph as you read, then using those keywords to write a 4-5 sentence summary at the end of each chapter. This builds the habit of progressive summarization – moving from micro-summaries at the paragraph level to macro-summaries at the chapter level.
Scaling up to chapter and section summaries
Once you’ve written paragraph-level notes, you have the raw material for a broader summary. Research-backed approaches to longer-text summarization recommend using headings and subheadings as the skeleton of your summary. Summarize what was covered under each subheading, and then compose an overall statement of the key ideas for the whole chapter. For a larger text, a summary should be no more than one-fifth of the original length – enough to capture the essentials without recreating the whole chapter.
One technique that helps with conciseness is the GIST strategy: after reading a section, summarize it in 20 words or fewer. This constraint forces you to paraphrase rather than copy, and paraphrasing is the difference between restating someone else’s words and actually demonstrating understanding. As literacy researcher Timothy Shanahan notes, a meta-analysis by Hebert et al. (2013) found that summarizing a passage improved understanding more than simply answering questions about it.
Putting the strategies together
These four strategies work best when used as a sequence rather than as isolated tools. Start by marking the text to identify key ideas and terms as you read. Use headings and subheadings to generate questions before you read each section, then read actively to answer them. After reading, create a graphic organizer to map out how the concepts relate to one another – especially useful for complex or multi-part topics. Finally, write summaries at the paragraph and chapter level in your own words to consolidate what you’ve learned and move it into long-term memory.
Each step builds on the previous one. Marking gives you the raw material for questions; questions give you purpose when you read; graphic organizers help you see the structure of the information; and summaries lock in what you’ve understood. The University of Washington’s Academic Support Programs put it well: to make meaning out of a text, you need to be an active reader who fits new facts into a pre-existing web of knowledge. These strategies are the tools that build that web.
