Few individuals have transformed the technological landscape as profoundly as Bill Gates. Born in Seattle, Washington, in 1955, William Henry Gates III grew up in an upper-middle-class family. His father was a prominent lawyer, and his mother served on several corporate boards. At age 13, Gates enrolled at the private Lakeside School, where his life would take a defining turn.
The school’s Mothers’ Club used proceeds from a rummage sale to purchase a Teletype terminal and computer time on a General Electric mainframe. At Lakeside, Gates met Paul Allen, a student two years his senior.
