Emotions do exactly that – they stir us, move us, and shape nearly every corner of our lives. Yet despite being something every human being experiences daily, emotions remain surprisingly difficult to pin down with a single clean definition. What exactly is an emotion? How does it differ from a mood? And why does it matter so deeply to everyday life? Defining emotions: what are they, exactly?
At its most fundamental level, the term emotion is derived from the Latin verb movere, meaning to stir up, agitate, or disturb – a clue that emotions have always been understood as forces of movement, both internal and external. But translating that etymology into a precise psychological definition has challenged scholars for centuries.
Two psychologists whose definitions remain foundational are R.S. Woodworth and Charles Morris. Woodworth defined emotion as a “conscious stirred-up state of the organism” – a state that manifests both as a felt inner disturbance and as an observable physical reaction. From Woodworth’s perspective, emotion is simultaneously internal (the individual’s felt experience) and external (the disrupted muscular and glandular activity visible to others). Morris, building on similar principles, placed emphasis on emotion as a response to stimuli that has both mental and physiological dimensions, helping us navigate and react to what is happening in our environment.
Both definitions converge on a critical insight: emotions are not purely mental events. According to the American Psychological Association, emotion is defined as “a complex reaction pattern, involving experiential, behavioral, and physiological elements.” In other words, when you feel something, your body feels it too – and so does your behavior.
Emotions are physical and mental states brought on by neurophysiological changes, variously associated with thoughts, feelings, behavioral responses, and a degree of pleasure or displeasure. They are complex, involving multiple interacting components rather than a single, simple reaction. These components – subjective experience, physiological arousal, cognitive appraisal, and behavioral response – work together to produce what we recognize as an emotional experience.
The three core components of emotions
To understand the nature of emotions more precisely, it helps to break them into their essential parts. Most psychologists recognize three interconnected components.
Subjective experience
All emotions begin with a subjective experience – also referred to as a stimulus. This is the personal, internal dimension of emotion: the felt sense of joy, sadness, fear, or excitement that only the individual experiencing it can fully access. Importantly, the same external event can produce entirely different emotional experiences in different people. One person might feel grief at the loss of a job while another feels relief. The subjective experience is shaped by personal history, values, and interpretation.
Physiological response
Emotions produce measurable changes in the body. Internal changes during emotions – such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and changes in the cardiovascular system – are direct results of the stimulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The sympathetic branch of the ANS prepares the body for “fight or flight” during threatening situations, releasing adrenaline and nor-adrenaline that sharpen the body’s readiness to respond.
External changes are equally observable. The voice changes according to the type of emotion, facial expressions shift, and body language transforms – stiffness of muscles, hand movements, and gestures all communicate the emotional state of the individual. These physiological signals are not merely side effects of emotion; they are integral to what emotion is.
Behavioral response
The behavioral response is the actual expression of the emotion – a smile, a grimace, a laugh, a sigh, or a full-body reaction depending on sociocultural norms and individual personality. Research published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology found that suppressing behavioral responses to emotion – such as holding back tears or forcing a neutral face – actually elevated participants’ heart rates. In other words, expressing emotions, both positive and negative, is healthier than suppression.
Key characteristics of emotions
Beyond the three-component model, emotions carry distinctive characteristics that define how they work and why they matter.
Emotions are universal but also individual
One of the most outstanding characteristics of emotion is its universality – emotions are experienced not only by human beings but also by animals, although animals differ in the depth, intensity, and quality of their emotional experience. Psychologist Paul Ekman identified seven universal emotions – happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, contempt, and surprise – that are expressed through the same facial expressions regardless of culture, age, or background. Yet within this universality, the triggers and intensities of emotion remain deeply personal.
Emotions have both pleasant and unpleasant dimensions
Emotions arise as a result of the satisfaction or non-satisfaction of biological and psychological needs. Satisfaction tends to arouse pleasant emotions, while non-satisfaction leads to unpleasant ones. This is why emotions serve a guiding function in human behavior – they signal whether our needs are being met and orient us toward what to approach or avoid.
Emotions can be triggered by direct perception or by thought
Emotions have two primary sources: direct perception and ideas. Direct perception of a situation – witnessing an accident, for example – can provoke an immediate emotional response. However, memory and imagination also provoke emotions. Thinking about a past embarrassment can bring back shame; imagining a future threat can produce anxiety just as vividly as encountering it in reality.
Strong emotions can impair rational thinking
Emotions and thinking are inversely related – during intense emotional excitement, thinking and reasoning are significantly affected and cannot proceed properly. Emotions are not decorative additions to human experience. They are functional – they serve critical roles in how we make decisions, navigate relationships, and maintain physical health.
Emotions drive behavior
Without emotions to motivate and push us, we would be passive and do nothing. Emotions quickly condense an experience and evaluate it to inform our decisions, so we can rapidly respond to the situation. Antonio Damasio’s landmark research on the somatic marker hypothesis demonstrated this vividly. When making decisions, physiological signals (or “somatic markers”) and their associated emotions are consciously or unconsciously linked to past outcomes, biasing decision-making toward certain behaviors while steering away from others. Patients with brain damage that impaired emotional processing repeatedly made poor financial decisions – even when they cognitively understood those decisions were suboptimal – because they could not access the emotional signals that normally guide choice.
Emotions shape social interaction
The physiological and behavioral responses associated with emotions illustrate that emotion is much more than a mental state – it affects our whole demeanor and our health. Furthermore, our ability to understand others’ behavioral responses plays a huge role in our emotional intelligence. When someone raises their voice, cries, or laughs spontaneously, others around them read those signals and respond. Emotions are the currency of social communication – they tell others what we need, what we value, and how we are interpreting shared situations.
Emotions affect physical health
Physical health is greatly affected by emotions – the ductless glands become active during emotional states, and prolonged emotional disturbances can have lasting physiological consequences. Chronic anxiety or anger, for instance, keeps the body in a sustained state of physiological arousal that over time contributes to cardiovascular strain and immune suppression. Research published in the Annual Review of Psychology confirms that emotions constitute potent, pervasive, and predictable drivers of decision-making – sometimes beneficial, sometimes harmful, depending on the context.
Difference between emotion and mood
Emotions and moods are closely related, and people often use the terms interchangeably. But psychologically, they are distinct in important ways. Understanding the difference is not just academic – it has real implications for how you manage your inner life.
Duration and intensity
Moods can last for hours while emotions last anywhere from seconds to minutes, at most. This is one of the most reliable markers distinguishing the two. Mood typically refers to a diffuse affective state that is of lower intensity than emotion, but considerably longer in duration. Whereas emotions are acute, moods evolve gradually over time – one can be sad or cheerful for several hours or even days.
Emotions are generally more intense and pronounced, involving strong, immediate reactions that can impact your thoughts and actions in the moment. Moods, by contrast, are typically less intense but have longer-lasting effects, subtly influencing your state of mind and behavior over time. A sudden burst of anger is an emotion. Spending an entire day feeling vaguely irritable without knowing exactly why is a mood.
Cause and object-directedness
In contrast to emotions or feelings, moods are less specific, less intense, and less likely to be provoked or instantiated by a particular stimulus or event. Emotions are nearly always directed at something – you feel afraid of something, joyful about something, angry at someone. Moods, unlike emotions, do not involve a particular attributed object – they are directed at the surroundings in general, or in the words of Frijda, at the “world as a whole.” A mood is typically the product of multiple accumulated causes – a poor night’s sleep, an unresolved conflict, dull weather – rather than a single identifiable trigger.
This is also why it is easier to identify what caused an emotion than what caused a mood. This is why it’s typically easier to identify emotional triggers but difficult to pinpoint the trigger for our moods.
Facial expression and visibility
Moods do not have their own unique facial expressions, while many emotions do. In fact, there are seven universal emotions that present with the same expressions regardless of age, sex, and social environment. One infers an irritable mood by seeing many facial expressions of anger, but there is no distinctive facial expression of irritability itself. Emotions are, in this sense, more visible and legible to others than moods are.
How moods and emotions influence each other
The relationship between moods and emotions is not one-way. Moods appear to lower the threshold needed to arouse related emotions. When you’re in an irritable mood, you find yourself feeling angry much more readily than usual – people construe the world around them in a way that permits, if not calls for, an angry response. Conversely, repeated or intense emotions can gradually shape a prevailing mood. Frequent episodes of joy can create a positive mood background; chronic stress can build into a persistent low mood.
Recognizing whether you’re experiencing a fleeting emotion or a lasting mood can help you understand your reactions better and manage your feelings more effectively. If you know you’re in a low mood – rather than reacting to a specific emotional trigger – you can avoid making important decisions in that state, knowing your perception is temporarily colored by something broader than the situation in front of you.
Why understanding emotions matters
Life would be dreary without emotions and feelings – they add color and meaning to living. Proper control and expression of emotions make life pleasant; lack of control and improper expression leads to misery. That is not mere sentiment. The psychological and physiological evidence supports it. Emotions serve as an internal guidance system – signaling what matters, warning of threats, motivating action, and connecting us to others.
The latest research has established that emotion is crucial in rational decision-making. Antonio Damasio and colleagues concluded that in the absence of emotional markers, decision-making is virtually unattainable. Far from being the enemy of reason, emotions are a necessary partner to it. The challenge – and the practice – lies in developing the self-awareness to use them wisely rather than be used by them.
Understanding the nature and characteristics of emotions is, in this sense, not just an academic exercise. It is one of the most practical things a person can learn – because your emotions are happening to you every day, shaping your choices, your health, and your relationships, whether you are paying attention or not.
