Structural analysis is a skill, which means it improves with consistent practice. Here are a few straightforward habits that will make it second nature over time.
First, when you come across an unfamiliar word while reading, resist the urge to immediately look it up. Spend fifteen seconds trying to break it into its component parts. Identify any prefix or suffix you recognize, then look for a familiar root. Even an approximate guess is valuable – it activates the pattern recognition that makes future word learning faster.
Second, spend a few minutes each week studying common roots. Familiarity with Greek and Latin roots, as well as prefixes and suffixes, can help you understand the meaning of new words. You do not need to memorize hundreds at once. Start with ten to fifteen high-frequency roots – words like aud (hear), vis (see), scrib (write), and port (carry) – and build from there.
