Everyone experiences stress – but very few people stop to ask what stress actually is. It’s one of those words we use constantly, yet its meaning has changed dramatically over centuries. Understanding stress at its roots – where the word comes from, how scientists came to study it, what actually triggers it, and why it isn’t always harmful – gives you a much clearer picture of what’s happening in your body and mind when life gets demanding.

Origins and definition of stress
The word stress didn’t start in psychology – it started in physics. In engineering and physics, stress refers to the interaction between a force and the resistance that opposes it. It describes what happens when pressure is applied to a material. This mechanical sense of the word dates back to at least the 17th century, rooted in the Latin strictus (meaning tight or narrow) and the Old French estrece (meaning narrowness or oppression).
It wasn’t until the 20th century that the word migrated into biology and medicine. Hans Selye, widely regarded as the “father of stress research,” was the first to formally bring this term into the medical lexicon to describe what he called the “nonspecific response of the body to any demand.” In other words, stress is not the event that happens to you – it is your body’s response to that event. This distinction is foundational. A traffic jam, a job interview, and a sudden illness are all different events, but the body’s underlying response to each follows a recognizable pattern.
Psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman later expanded this view, defining stress as the process of adjusting to circumstances that disrupt, or threaten to disrupt, a person’s equilibrium. This definition captures both the physiological and psychological dimensions of the experience, making it more comprehensive than purely biological models.
Historical perspectives on stress
The scientific study of stress has a layered history, shaped by the contributions of several key figures across more than a century of research.
Claude Bernard and the internal environment
The groundwork was laid in the 19th century by French physiologist Claude Bernard, who introduced the concept of the milieu intรฉrieur – the internal environment of the body that must remain stable for survival. Bernard argued that living organisms constantly work to maintain this internal stability despite changes in the outside world. This idea became the bedrock for everything that followed in stress science.
Walter Cannon and the fight-or-flight response
In the early 20th century, Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon became the first scientist to identify the body’s physiological reactions to stress. Working in the 1910s and 1920s, Cannon described what he termed the fight-or-flight response – the rapid physiological activation (increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, faster breathing) that occurs when a person faces a perceived threat.
Cannon also coined the term homeostasis to describe the body’s tendency to maintain stable internal conditions. In his view, the fight-or-flight response was not a flaw but a feature – an adaptive mechanism that helps organisms survive by mobilizing energy in moments of danger. Cannon’s work demonstrated that signals from the brain activate the sympathetic nervous system in response to emotionally arousing stimuli, producing the cascade of physical changes we now associate with acute stress.
Hans Selye and the general adaptation syndrome
Building directly on Cannon’s framework, endocrinologist Hans Selye took the science of stress further than anyone before him. In the 1930s, while conducting experiments at McGill University, Selye discovered that rats exposed to a range of harmful stimuli – extreme cold, surgical injury, and excessive physical exertion – all developed the same physical changes: enlarged adrenal glands, shrunken lymph nodes, and stomach ulcers. The stressors were different, but the bodily response was identical.
This led Selye to propose the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS), a three-stage model describing how the body responds to prolonged stress:
- Alarm reaction: The body detects a threat and activates the fight-or-flight response, flooding the system with stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.
- Stage of resistance: The body attempts to adapt and cope with the ongoing stressor. Physiological arousal remains elevated, but the initial alarm fades.
- Stage of exhaustion: If the stressor persists, the body’s adaptive resources are depleted, leaving it vulnerable to illness, fatigue, and breakdown.
Selye defined stress as a state of homeostasis being challenged – a definition that unified physiology and psychology. His model had an enormous impact on medicine because it offered a concrete explanation for how chronic stress leads to physical disease, from hypertension to cardiovascular disorders.
Defining stressors
If stress is the body’s response, then a stressor is whatever triggers that response. Stressors are factors with the potential to directly challenge homeostasis – anything that disrupts the body’s internal balance. They are not inherently negative; a stressor is simply a demand placed on the system.
Stressors are generally grouped into three broad categories:
Environmental stressors
These come from the physical world around us. Noise pollution, extreme temperatures, overcrowding, natural disasters, poor air quality, and unsafe living or working conditions all qualify as environmental stressors. What makes them particularly difficult is that they are often outside an individual’s direct control – you cannot simply choose to stop experiencing a heat wave or a noisy neighborhood.
Social stressors
Social stressors arise from interpersonal relationships and the broader social environment. Conflict in relationships, workplace pressure, financial hardship, discrimination, social isolation, major life transitions (like moving to a new city or losing a job), and cultural expectations all fall under this category. Social stressors can be particularly persistent because they are often tied to ongoing circumstances rather than single events, making them harder to resolve quickly.
Psychological stressors
Psychological stressors are internal – they originate in a person’s thoughts, beliefs, fears, and perceptions. Anxiety about the future, fear of failure, low self-esteem, unresolved trauma, and habitual negative thinking patterns can all generate significant stress responses even in the absence of any external threat. This is a critical point: the brain does not distinguish sharply between a real danger and a vividly imagined one. The stress response can be activated by perception alone.
It’s also worth noting that the same event can function as a stressor for one person and not another. Stressors are inherently neutral – the same stressor can produce a positive or a negative response depending on the individual’s perception of the situation, their current state, and their sense of control. This is why understanding stress requires looking at both the external trigger and the internal appraisal of it.
Stress as a dual concept: eustress and distress
One of the most important – and most underappreciated – insights in stress research is that not all stress is harmful. Selye himself recognized this and, in 1975, introduced a formal distinction between two types of stress: eustress and distress.
Eustress: the productive side of stress
Eustress takes its prefix from the Greek word eu, meaning “good.” It refers to stress that feels manageable, motivating, and even energizing. Eustress is not defined by the type of stressor but by how a person perceives it – as a positive challenge rather than a threatening burden. The nervous anticipation before a job interview, the focus you feel when working toward a meaningful deadline, the excitement of starting a new project – these are all forms of eustress.
Eustress has measurable benefits. It improves focus, boosts performance, builds resilience, and correlates positively with life satisfaction. Research has shown that eustress and distress produce different responses in the neuroendocrine system, particularly depending on the degree of personal control an individual feels over the stressor. Under eustress conditions, catecholamine levels (hormones linked to energy and alertness) rise, but cortisol levels – associated with chronic stress damage – do not spike in the same way.
Distress: when stress becomes harmful
Distress draws its prefix from the Latin dis, meaning “bad.” This is the form of stress most people think of when they hear the word. Selye argued that persistent stress not resolved through coping or adaptation becomes distress, which can lead to anxiety, withdrawal, and depressive behavior. Distress arises when demands exceed a person’s perceived ability to cope. It is overwhelming rather than motivating, and when it becomes chronic, it damages the body.
Chronic distress has been linked to a wide range of health problems, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, immune suppression, sleep disruption, and gastrointestinal disorders. Unlike eustress, which tends to be time-limited and tied to a clear goal, distress often persists without resolution – keeping the body locked in a prolonged state of physiological activation that wears down its defenses.
The role of perception
What separates eustress from distress is not usually the stressor itself – it is how the individual appraises it. Eustress motivates and enhances performance, while distress overwhelms and can paralyze clear thinking. Two people facing the same situation – say, a high-stakes presentation – can have entirely different stress experiences based on their perceived control, their confidence, and their past experiences with similar challenges.
This is why the psychological dimension of stress is just as important as the physiological one. The body’s stress machinery is ancient and powerful, but the mind plays a decisive role in determining whether that machinery works for you or against you. Stress effects are biological consequences resulting from the struggle with stressors – and these effects can include re-establishing healthy homeostasis (positive effects) or causing damage to the body (negative effects).
Why this understanding matters
The evolution from a purely physical definition of stress to a rich, dual concept involving both biology and psychology reflects how complex the human stress response truly is. Stress is not simply a problem to be eliminated. It is, at its core, the body’s way of rising to a challenge. The question is whether the demands being placed on a person are ones they can meet – and whether they perceive themselves as capable of meeting them.
Recognizing that stress exists on a spectrum – from the productive pressure of eustress to the damaging weight of chronic distress – opens up a more nuanced and practical approach to managing it. Rather than treating all stress as the enemy, the goal becomes learning to harness the kind that helps while minimizing the kind that harms.
