Before a reader can understand any text, they must first be able to decode it – that is, translate written symbols into the sounds and words they represent. Decoding is the ability to apply knowledge of letter-sound relationships, including knowledge of letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words. When a reader can decode fluently, they free up mental energy for comprehension. When decoding is slow or labored, that energy is consumed by the act of identifying words, leaving little left for understanding meaning.
What is phonemic awareness and why does it matter?
Phonemic awareness is at the heart of decoding. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, distinguish, and manipulate the individual sounds, or phonemes, that comprise spoken words. In practical terms, a reader who has strong phonemic awareness can break the word “splat” into its four distinct sounds – /s/, /p/, /l/, /a/, /t/ – and blend them back together. This ability is the bridge between spoken and written language.
Phonological awareness is essential for reading because written words correspond to spoken words. Readers must have awareness of the speech sounds that letters and letter combinations represent in order to move from a printed word to a spoken word. Research consistently shows that phonemic awareness is the best predictor of early reading ability, and problems with it have been identified as a major cause of reading difficulties, including dyslexia.

Skilled readers combine both: they skim first to get the overview, then scan to locate specific details. Research shows that distractions can reduce reading comprehension by up to 40 percent. Focused readers have stronger memory recall, faster reading speed, and higher retention – but this does not happen by accident. It happens by design. When attention wavers, the brain fails to encode information into long-term memory effectively, which is why a reader can finish a chapter and recall almost nothing from it.
Engaging with a book for an extended period conditions the brain to focus on a single task without external interruptions. This practice strengthens attention span, improves cognitive endurance, and enhances the ability to complete other tasks requiring concentration. In other words, sustained reading is itself a form of focus training – the more consistently you do it, the stronger your attention becomes.

The most effective way to improve retention is to shift from passive to active reading. The Pomodoro Technique – 25 minutes of focused reading followed by a 5-minute break – works particularly well for maintaining attention without overwhelming working memory. Breaking a reading task into shorter, intentional sessions reduces cognitive fatigue and keeps comprehension levels high throughout.
The role of the reading environment
External environment matters just as much as internal strategy. Loud places and gadgets – phones and laptops in particular – make it tough to focus on reading. Feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or disengaged can tire the brain and make it hard to concentrate. Choosing a quiet, dedicated reading space, silencing notifications, and reading material you are genuinely interested in are all non-negotiable foundations for sustained attention.
Beyond the environment, it helps to know that focus is a trainable cognitive skill, not a fixed trait. Paper reading has many benefits over online reading – it increases retention and comprehension, is more intentional than mindless scrolling, and engages multiple senses. Regular, deliberate reading practice builds the same kind of cognitive endurance that physical exercise builds in the body.
