Not everyone responds to stress the same way. Two people can face an identical situation – a tight deadline, a health scare, a financial setback – and walk away with completely different psychological outcomes. One bounces back quickly; the other spirals into anxiety. The difference often isn’t the stressor itself. It’s the moderators – the personal and social factors that sit between stress and its impact on your well-being. Understanding these moderators helps explain why some people are more stress-resilient than others, and what anyone can do to build that resilience.

What are stress moderators?
A stress moderator is any variable that influences the relationship between a stressor and the stress response. It doesn’t eliminate the stressor, but it changes how much harm that stressor does. Think of it as a filter. The same amount of pressure passes through, but what comes out on the other side differs based on what the filter is made of. Three of the most well-researched moderators are locus of control, social support, and a combination of the personality traits known as hardiness and optimism. Each operates differently, but all three significantly affect how stress is experienced and managed.
Locus of control and stress
The concept of locus of control was introduced by psychologist Julian Rotter in the 1950s. It refers to the degree to which a person believes they have control over the events that affect their life. People who hold an internal locus of control believe their actions, choices, and efforts shape their outcomes. Those with an external locus of control believe that outcomes are largely determined by forces outside themselves – luck, fate, or other people.
This distinction has significant consequences for stress. Research by Sandler and Lakey found that the correlation between negative life events and anxiety was stronger for externals than for internals, meaning people with an internal locus of control were better protected against stress-related psychological symptoms. The mechanism is relatively straightforward: if you believe you can influence your circumstances, you’re more likely to take action rather than passively suffer.
Internal vs. external locus of control in practice
Studies consistently show that people with an internal locus of control tend to use problem-focused coping – actively working to reduce or eliminate the source of stress. Those with an external orientation more often rely on emotion-focused coping, which can include avoidance or denial. While emotion-focused coping isn’t always unhelpful, it rarely addresses the root of the problem and can leave the stressor unresolved.
This shows up in academic settings too. Students who believe their academic outcomes are within their control are more likely to develop effective study habits and manage their time well – reducing stress before it accumulates. In the workplace, a study of civil servants and student teachers found that locus of control moderated the relationship between job demands and mental health outcomes, with externals showing greater vulnerability to stress-related distress.
Internal locus of control during the COVID-19 pandemic
A particularly instructive case came from research conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study involving over 2,700 participants across Norway and German-speaking countries found that an internal locus of control acted as a buffer against pandemic-related mental distress, while an external locus of control amplified the negative effects. Even in a situation largely outside individual control, the belief that one could influence aspects of their own life made a measurable psychological difference. This suggests that locus of control doesn’t require the stressor to actually be controllable – the perception of general agency is itself protective.
There is one important caveat. An overly rigid internal orientation can backfire. Research using physiological stress measures found that while internal locus of control predicted faster cortisol recovery after acute stress, those who overestimate their control can also experience heightened frustration when outcomes don’t align with effort. Balance matters. The protective benefit of internal locus of control comes from realistic agency – the belief that effort matters, not that one controls everything.
The role of social support
Stress is not only an internal experience. The people around you – and how available and responsive they are – have a direct impact on how stressful events affect you. Social support refers to the resources available to individuals through their relationships with others, including family, friends, colleagues, and community members. Researchers generally distinguish two main dimensions: emotional support (such as empathy, love, and reassurance) and instrumental support (practical help like financial assistance, childcare, or shared labor).
How social support buffers stress
The stress-buffering hypothesis proposes that social support doesn’t just contribute to general well-being – it specifically weakens the link between stressful events and negative health outcomes. Research published in the journal Psychiatry found that social support may moderate both genetic and environmental vulnerabilities to stress, with measurable effects on neurobiological stress systems including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis and the oxytocin system. In other words, having supportive people around doesn’t just feel better – it produces a different physiological stress response.
A study examining different age groups during the COVID-19 pandemic found that high levels of social support could buffer the negative mental health effects of low resilience – essentially compensating for personal vulnerability through relational resources. This is an important finding: social support doesn’t only enhance resilience in already-resilient people. It can also protect those who are psychologically more vulnerable.
Quality over quantity
Research consistently finds that quality of social support matters more than the size of one’s social network. A few deeply supportive relationships are more protective against stress than a large network of superficial connections. This is especially relevant for emotional support – the experience of being genuinely understood, valued, and cared for is what drives the stress-buffering effect. That said, different types of stress call for different types of support. Practical stressors often benefit most from instrumental help, while emotional distress typically responds best to empathy and presence.
The relationship between social support and locus of control is also worth noting. The same research by Sandler and Lakey found that while externals tended to receive more social support (likely because they sought it more actively), the stress-buffering effect of that support was stronger for internals. This suggests that how you use social support – not just whether you receive it – shapes its protective value.
Hardiness and optimism as stress buffers
Beyond locus of control and social support, certain personality traits appear to function as built-in stress moderators. Two of the most studied are hardiness and optimism. While related, they operate through distinct mechanisms.
What is hardiness?
The concept of psychological hardiness was developed by Suzanne Kobasa in a landmark 1979 paper published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Kobasa proposed that hardiness moderates the relationship between stressful life events and illness, and defined it through three interconnected dispositions she called the 3 Cs:
Commitment refers to a deep engagement with life – work, relationships, and activities – accompanied by genuine curiosity and interest in the world. People high in commitment don’t disengage when things get hard; they stay involved and find meaning in what they do. Control is the belief that one can influence the events unfolding around them through their own efforts – functionally similar to internal locus of control, but applied specifically within the hardiness framework. Challenge is the belief that change is a normal part of life and represents an opportunity for growth rather than a threat. Hardy people tend to reframe stressful situations as less threatening, and this reappraisal reduces the actual impact of the stress on their health.
How hardiness works
Hardiness functions through a combination of cognitive and behavioral mechanisms. Research across military, academic, business, and healthcare contexts has found that individuals high in hardiness perform better under stress and show lower rates of stress-related illness. Part of this is attitudinal: hardy individuals appraise stressors as less catastrophic. But part of it is behavioral – they are more likely to seek social support, engage in problem-solving, and maintain healthy self-care practices under pressure.
A clinical trial with pediatric nurses – one of the most stressed healthcare populations – found that a hardiness-based intervention significantly reduced perceived stress among participants. Those who received hardiness training reported greater psychological resilience and lower stress scores compared to the control group. Importantly, the researchers note that hardy individuals view challenge as a necessary part of life and an opportunity to learn, rather than as a threat – a cognitive stance that fundamentally changes how stressors are processed.
The role of optimism
Optimism – the general expectation that good outcomes are more likely than bad ones – is a closely related but distinct moderator of stress. While hardiness is a broader personality structure, optimism specifically targets how people interpret and anticipate events. Optimistic people tend to attribute negative events to temporary, specific causes rather than permanent, global ones, which limits the psychological fallout from setbacks.
A review of resilience research found that optimism consistently emerged as a protective factor, particularly in the context of traumatic stress. Among veterans, those who scored higher on optimism showed lower post-traumatic stress symptoms and higher well-being. Separately, a study of female survivors of sexual assault found that both optimism and gratitude buffered the relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms and suicidal ideation. These aren’t small effects – they represent meaningful differences in how individuals navigate some of the most extreme stressors a person can experience.
From a neurobiological standpoint, optimism appears to influence the brain’s reward system, making it more resistant to stress-induced disruption. Highly optimistic people tend to maintain more positive affect and higher cognitive function even during prolonged stress – outcomes that map directly onto lower rates of depression and anxiety.
Hardiness and optimism together
A prospective study tracking over 1,200 people through seven measurement points during the COVID-19 pandemic examined how multiple resilience factors – including hardiness, optimism, social support, and locus of control – interacted to predict mental health outcomes. The findings confirmed that these factors don’t operate in isolation. Hardiness and optimism were correlated, mutually reinforcing traits, and both contributed independently to lower psychopathological symptoms. Crucially, the study also confirmed that no single resilience factor is a magic shield – what matters is having multiple protective resources in place, and the match between those resources and the specific demands of the stressor.
Can these moderators be developed?
A common misconception is that hardiness and optimism are fixed personality traits – either you have them or you don’t. The evidence doesn’t support this. Hardiness researchers, including Salvatore Maddi, developed structured training programs (called HardiTraining) that have been shown to increase hardy attitudes in participants across different professions. Similarly, cognitive-behavioral interventions have been shown to shift pessimistic thinking patterns toward more adaptive appraisals. Social support can be actively cultivated through relationship investment. Even locus of control, while relatively stable over time, shifts with experience – especially through success experiences that build the sense of personal agency.
The practical takeaway is that stress moderators aren’t purely inherited traits or fixed circumstances. They are, to a significant degree, trainable and cultivable – which means that understanding them isn’t just academically interesting. It’s directly relevant to stress management and psychological well-being in everyday life.
