When we think about sustainability, we often focus on carbon emissions, renewable energy, or waste management. But there’s a crucial dimension that shapes how sustainable practices unfold in communities worldwide: gender. The relationship between gender and sustainability isn’t just about fairness or inclusion. It’s about recognizing that women and men experience environmental challenges differently, contribute unique knowledge to solutions, and face distinct barriers when accessing resources. Understanding these gender perspectives is essential for creating sustainability practices that actually work for everyone.

Women as environmental stewards and resource managers

Across the globe, women play a central role in managing natural resources for their families and communities. In developing countries, women produce up to 80 percent of food, and they’re typically responsible for collecting water, firewood, and other essential resources. This daily interaction with the environment gives women specialized knowledge about ecosystems, seasonal changes, and sustainable practices that has been passed down through generations.

Indigenous women, in particular, serve as custodians of seed preservation, soil regeneration techniques, and traditional ecological knowledge. Their expertise in preserving crop biodiversity, protecting local bee populations, and using natural soil building methods represents invaluable wisdom for building climate resilience. In Africa’s Sahel region, women have led grassroots reforestation efforts through agroecology, helping combat desertification while improving food security.

The Chipko Movement: women protecting forests

One of the most powerful examples of women’s environmental leadership emerged in the 1970s in Uttarakhand, India. The Chipko Movement began when rural women, led by figures like Gaura Devi, literally hugged trees to prevent them from being cut down by commercial loggers. These women understood something that the timber contractors did not: the real value of forests wasn’t in dead trees sold for profit, but in living ecosystems that provided springs, streams, food for cattle, and fuel for their hearths.

The movement succeeded because women were most directly affected by deforestation. As the backbone of Uttarakhand’s agrarian economy, they depended on forests for their daily survival. When logging led to landslides, floods, and scarcity of water and firewood, women walked farther and worked harder to meet basic needs. Their protest wasn’t just environmental activism; it was a fight for survival.

The impact was significant. The Chipko Movement led to a 15-year ban on tree felling in the Himalayan region and influenced the 1980 Forest Conservation Act in India. Beyond policy changes, it demonstrated how women’s leadership in environmental conservation could spark transformative change. Today, the movement remains an inspiration for grassroots activism worldwide.

How environmental degradation disproportionately affects women

While women contribute significantly to environmental conservation, they also bear heavier burdens when ecosystems degrade. This disparity stems from existing gender inequalities in access to resources, education, mobility, and decision-making power.

Resource scarcity hits women hardest

When climate change causes droughts, erratic rainfall, or resource depletion, women must work harder and travel farther to secure water, food, and fuel for their families. In many regions, women bear disproportionate responsibility for securing these resources. This additional burden can force girls to leave school to help their mothers, perpetuating cycles of inequality.

The statistics are stark. By 2050, climate change may push up to 158 million more women and girls into poverty compared to 16 million more men and boys. Currently, 47.8 million more women than men face food insecurity and hunger globally.

Greater vulnerability during disasters

When natural disasters strike, women face heightened risks. Women and children are 14 times more likely to die than men during extreme weather events, primarily due to limited access to information, restricted mobility, and fewer resources. During the 2004 Asian tsunami, survival rates were significantly higher among men than women, reflecting deep-rooted cultural and economic inequalities.

After disasters, challenges multiply. Women typically take on increased caregiving responsibilities while facing reduced access to relief assistance. Water and sanitation systems become compromised, creating additional health and safety risks. Climate change also impacts maternal and neonatal health, with extreme heat increasing stillbirth rates and warming temperatures spreading vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue fever.

The intersection of climate change and violence

Environmental degradation doesn’t just threaten physical resources; it can also fuel social instability and gender-based violence. Research indicates that climate change intensifies social and economic stresses that drive increased violence against women. Studies have documented a 28 percent increase in femicide during heatwaves. When climate-related disasters destroy livelihoods and destabilize communities, women face elevated risks of domestic violence, trafficking, and early marriage.

Building sustainability policies that address gender needs

Creating truly sustainable systems requires policies that recognize and address gender-specific needs and contributions. This means moving beyond gender-blind approaches to integrate women’s voices, knowledge, and leadership at every level of environmental decision-making.

Ensuring equal access to resources

One critical policy area is land rights and resource access. Currently, only about 13.8 percent of women globally are landholders, and in sub-Saharan Africa, just 14.2 percent own land. Yet research shows that if women had equal access to productive resources, farm yields could increase by 20 to 30 percent, potentially feeding an additional 100 to 150 million people.

Policies supporting women’s land ownership and access to credit, education, and technology can unlock sustainable practices. When women control resources, they’re more likely to invest in environmentally sound methods like tree planting, soil fertility improvement, and water harvesting.

Including women in decision-making

Women’s participation in environmental governance leads to better outcomes. Research shows countries with higher proportions of women in parliament are more likely to ratify international environmental treaties and implement stricter climate policies. Gender-diverse firms demonstrate better environmental reporting and make more investments in renewable energy.

Yet women remain largely excluded from climate policy processes. The lack of women in decision-making positions means that policies often fail to address the specific vulnerabilities and needs that women face. Supporting women in decision-making benefits both health and environment, making their involvement essential for effective recovery and resilience strategies.

Gender-responsive climate frameworks

International frameworks increasingly recognize the gender-environment connection. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted a Gender Action Plan in 2019 that recommends systematically integrating gender considerations into climate policy. The Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 5 on gender equality, emphasize that achieving gender equality supports progress across all 17 goals, including climate action and biodiversity protection.

Effective implementation requires gender analysis in all budget lines and financial instruments for climate change. This ensures gender-sensitive investments in adaptation programs, mitigation strategies, and technology transfer. It also means collecting sex-disaggregated data to track progress and understand how climate impacts vary between women and men.

Supporting women’s economic empowerment in green sectors

Sustainability policies should create opportunities for women in the green economy. Women currently account for 40 percent of employees in solar energy, significantly higher than their representation in oil and gas. Expanding women’s access to green jobs in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation can simultaneously advance gender equality and environmental goals.

Programs should also recognize and value women’s unpaid care and domestic work. Women carry out at least two and a half times more unpaid household work than men. When climate disasters strike, this burden increases dramatically, limiting women’s ability to participate in recovery efforts and economic opportunities.

The path forward: integrating gender perspectives into sustainability

Moving toward sustainable development requires acknowledging that gender equality and environmental sustainability are inseparable. Many barriers to effective sustainability policies stem from discriminatory social norms and legal systems. Breaking these systemic barriers doesn’t require radical inventions, but it does demand intentional efforts to include women’s voices and address their specific needs.

This means supporting women’s participation in community-based natural resource management, ensuring their access to education and information about climate risks, and creating safe spaces for women’s leadership to flourish. It requires recognizing that women aren’t simply victims of climate change; they’re powerful agents of change with invaluable knowledge and capacities.

From the Chipko Movement’s tree-huggers to modern-day climate activists, Indigenous knowledge keepers to women entrepreneurs in renewable energy, women continue to lead the way toward more sustainable futures. Their leadership demonstrates that addressing gender inequality isn’t just morally right; it’s essential for building resilient, sustainable communities that can thrive in the face of environmental challenges.
