Every time you open a website – whether you’re checking your email, watching a video, or reading an article – a web browser is doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Most of us use browsers daily without giving them much thought. But understanding what they are, how they work, and what sets different browsers apart is genuinely useful – especially as more of our personal and professional lives move online.

What is a web browser?
A web browser is a software application that retrieves and displays content from the internet. In simple terms, it’s the tool you use to access websites. According to Wikipedia, when a user inputs a URL into the browser’s address bar, the browser fetches files from a web server and then renders that content as a readable, interactive page on your screen. This process happens in fractions of a second every time you click a link or type an address.
Browsers are designed to read and interpret hypertext documents – web pages written in HTML (HyperText Markup Language). These documents often contain links to other pages, which is where the concept of “hypertext” comes from. Clicking a hyperlink sends a new request to a server, and the browser fetches and displays another page. This chain of linked pages forms what we call the World Wide Web.
Beyond displaying text and images, modern browsers also handle video, audio, animations, and even complex interactive applications like online spreadsheets or video conferencing tools. They do this through a combination of a rendering engine (which converts code into visual content) and a JavaScript engine (which powers interactive features). Most browsers also support HTTPS – the secure version of the web’s communication protocol – ensuring that your data is encrypted when transmitted between your device and a server.
The first-ever web browser, called WorldWideWeb, was created in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee, a computer scientist at CERN. It was a text-only tool with no graphical interface. The real turning point came in 1993, when Mosaic was released – the first browser to display images alongside text, making the web dramatically more accessible to everyday users. That moment sparked the internet boom of the 1990s and set the stage for every browser that followed.
The core functions of a web browser
While different browsers have different designs and features, their core functions are essentially the same. Here’s what every browser does:
Fetching web content: When you enter a URL, the browser contacts the relevant web server and requests the page’s data – text, images, videos, stylesheets, and scripts.
Rendering pages: The browser processes the raw code it receives and converts it into the visual layout you see. Different browsers use different rendering engines. Chrome and Edge use Blink, Firefox uses Gecko, and Safari uses WebKit.
Navigation and history: Browsers let you move backward and forward between pages, bookmark sites you want to revisit, and maintain a history of everything you’ve visited. Most also offer a private browsing mode that doesn’t log your activity locally.
Security and privacy: Modern browsers warn you about unsafe websites, block malicious downloads, and support encrypted connections (HTTPS). Some go further with built-in ad blockers, anti-tracking tools, and privacy dashboards.
Extension support: Most graphical browsers allow you to install extensions or plug-ins – small add-ons that extend the browser’s functionality. These range from ad blockers to password managers to productivity tools.
Graphical vs. non-graphical browsers
Not all browsers work the same way. The most fundamental distinction is between graphical browsers and non-graphical (text-based) browsers. Understanding this difference helps clarify why browsers exist in so many different forms.
Graphical browsers
Graphical browsers are by far the most common type in use today. They are designed to translate underlying code into visual content that human eyes can easily process – including images, videos, animations, styled text, and interactive elements. When you see a website with a colorful layout, embedded videos, and clickable buttons, you’re looking at what a graphical browser renders.
These browsers use a graphical user interface (GUI), which means you interact with them using a mouse, touchscreen, or keyboard shortcuts. Features like tabs, bookmarks, extension libraries, and password managers are all standard in graphical browsers. Examples include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Microsoft Edge.
The trade-off is resource usage. Graphical browsers consume more memory and processing power than their text-based counterparts because they’re doing much more work – loading fonts, rendering images, running scripts, and managing multiple tabs simultaneously.
Non-graphical (text-based) browsers
Non-graphical browsers, also called text-based browsers, display only the text content of a webpage. They strip out images, videos, and all other visual elements. They are often used in command-line environments or on devices with very limited system resources, and they are significantly faster and more lightweight than graphical browsers.
Well-known examples include Lynx – one of the oldest browsers still in active use, released in 1992 – and W3m, which supports tables and some basic page structure. Another option, Links, provides a simple terminal-based experience and even allows saving bookmarks. These browsers are navigated primarily through keyboard commands rather than a mouse.
There are several situations where text-based browsers are the practical choice. They work well in low-bandwidth environments where loading images and multimedia would be too slow. Developers also use them to test how accessible a website’s content is when stripped of visual design. And importantly, they are compatible with screen readers, making them a more accessible option for users with visual impairments, since the plain text output can be read aloud easily.
The key difference comes down to purpose: graphical browsers prioritize a rich, immersive experience; text-based browsers prioritize speed, accessibility, and minimal resource use. Sometimes, especially in server environments without a graphical interface, a text-based browser like Lynx, elinks, or W3M is the only practical option for accessing the web at all.
Popular web browsers: features and platforms
The browser market is dominated by a handful of major players, though each has a distinct identity, feature set, and user base. As of 2024, Google Chrome holds around 66% of global market share, followed by Safari at about 16%, Edge at 6%, and Firefox at roughly 3%.
Google Chrome
Chrome is the world’s most widely used browser by a significant margin. As of 2025, it commands over 70% of the global browser market, with an estimated 3.98 billion users. It was first released by Google in September 2008 and was built on the open-source Chromium project.
Chrome’s appeal lies in its speed, clean interface, and extensive extension library available through the Chrome Web Store. It integrates seamlessly with Google services like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, and YouTube. It is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. For developers, Chrome’s built-in DevTools are a standard part of web development workflows. On the downside, Chrome is known to be resource-heavy – it can consume significant RAM, particularly when many tabs are open.
Mozilla Firefox
Firefox is developed by Mozilla, a non-profit organization, which sets it apart from most of its competitors. This means it operates without the profit motives that drive companies like Google or Apple, allowing it to prioritize user privacy more aggressively. Over 20% of Firefox users have its Enhanced Tracking Protection feature enabled, which blocks third-party tracking cookies by default for all users.
Firefox has over 100 million downloads on Android’s Google Play Store and is available across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. It is particularly popular among developers and privacy-conscious users. While its market share has declined over the years due to Chrome’s dominance, it retains a loyal and technically engaged user base. Its open-source nature also means it benefits from community contributions to its development.
Apple Safari
Safari is Apple’s browser and comes pre-installed on all Apple devices – iPhones, iPads, and Macs. It was first released in 2003 and is built on the WebKit engine. Safari currently holds around 14-19% of global browser market share, a figure driven largely by the widespread adoption of iPhones worldwide.
Safari is designed to work in tight harmony with Apple’s ecosystem, including features like iCloud Keychain for password syncing, Handoff (which lets you continue browsing on a different Apple device), and deep integration with Apple Pay. It is notably energy-efficient, making it the preferred browser for MacBook users who want to maximize battery life. Safari also places a strong emphasis on privacy, with Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) built in to limit cross-site tracking.
Microsoft Edge
Edge is Microsoft’s current browser, and it’s the direct successor to Internet Explorer. The original Internet Explorer, launched in 1995, was once the world’s dominant browser but steadily lost ground and was officially retired in 2022. The new Edge, rebuilt from scratch on the Chromium engine, was launched in January 2020.
Edge holds around 4.85-6.8% of global market share and is the default browser on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. It includes Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant, which is integrated directly into the browser interface for tasks like summarizing web pages and answering questions in context. Edge also has a reading mode, built-in PDF support, and collection tools for organizing research. It is particularly strong in enterprise environments where it integrates with Microsoft 365.
Opera
Opera is one of the older browsers still in active use, having been around since 1995. It holds a modest global market share of around 2-2.5%, but it is notably more popular in regions like Africa and Southeast Asia. Opera has long been known for including features that other browsers require extensions for – such as a built-in VPN, a built-in ad blocker, and a battery-saving mode for laptops. It also introduced the concept of tabbed browsing before most other browsers adopted it. Opera Mini, its lightweight version, is especially popular in regions with limited data connectivity.
Internet Explorer: a historical note
No overview of browsers would be complete without mentioning Internet Explorer (IE). Launched by Microsoft in 1995, IE quickly rose to dominate the browser market, largely because Microsoft bundled it free with Windows. At its peak, IE held over 90% of global browser usage. However, it was slow to adapt to modern web standards, became increasingly vulnerable to security threats, and was eventually overtaken by Firefox and later Chrome. Microsoft officially ended support for Internet Explorer in 2022, marking the end of a significant chapter in web history.
How browsers are evolving
Browsers are not static tools. They are actively evolving in response to changes in how people use the internet. One of the most notable recent trends is the integration of artificial intelligence directly into browsers. Microsoft Edge includes Copilot, and Google Chrome has integrated the Gemini AI assistant. Entirely new AI-native browsers like Perplexity Comet and ChatGPT Atlas have also entered the market in the mid-2020s, signaling that the browser itself is becoming a platform for AI-assisted work and research.
Privacy is another major axis of competition. Browsers like Brave – which now holds around 1% of the global market – block ads and trackers by default and offer native Tor integration for anonymous browsing. Firefox has rolled out Total Cookie Protection as a default for all users. Safari blocks third-party tracking by default. As user demand for privacy-focused browsing grows, every major browser is adding stronger protections, even as advertising-driven companies like Google face criticism for not going far enough.
The underlying shift is that browsers have grown from simple document viewers into full-featured application platforms. People now use browsers to write documents, hold video calls, edit photos, manage projects, and run complex business software. The browser is, for many users, effectively their operating system.
