Every time someone claims that men are “naturally” more logical or that women are “inherently” more emotional, they are making a claim about sex-based differences – whether they realize it or not. Psychology has spent decades asking a deceptively simple question: are the sexes more different than they are alike, and does it even matter how we frame that question? It turns out, the way researchers choose to look at sex-related comparisons – whether they hunt for differences or similarities – has profound consequences, not just for science, but for how society treats men and women in everyday life.

The alpha and beta biases in gender comparisons
When psychologists study gender, they inevitably bring assumptions to the table. Two key concepts help identify those assumptions: alpha bias and beta bias, first articulated by researchers Hare-Mustin and Marecek in 1988.
Alpha bias refers to the tendency to exaggerate differences between men and women, treating those differences as real, fixed, and enduring. Theories shaped by alpha bias tend to portray male and female traits as sharply separate – and often rank one above the other. Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory is a classic example. Freud argued that because girls do not experience castration anxiety in the same way boys do, they develop weaker superegos, which he equated with inferior moral development. His framing didn’t just describe a difference – it declared women deficient. Alpha bias can also emerge in evolutionary psychology, which attributes behavioral differences between men and women to hardwired adaptations, such as men being naturally dominant and women being more invested in parenting. While evolutionary thinking has its merits, applying it rigidly to explain present-day social inequality goes well beyond what the evidence supports.
Beta bias takes the opposite approach – it downplays or ignores differences between men and women, often by simply assuming that findings from research on men apply equally to women. Lawrence Kohlberg’s influential theory of moral development is a textbook case of beta bias. His entire framework for moral reasoning was built on interviews with boys and men. When women were later tested using his model, they appeared to score lower – not because they were less moral, but because Kohlberg’s model was built on a male template that didn’t account for women’s tendency to prioritize care and relationships in moral decisions, as Carol Gilligan later demonstrated. Similarly, early biological research into the fight-or-flight stress response was largely conducted on male animals, with the assumption that the results would apply universally – even though hormonal variation in females could produce meaningfully different responses.
Why both biases are problematic
Alpha bias reinforces stereotypes by treating culturally shaped behaviors as biological destiny. It frames difference as hierarchy. Beta bias, on the other hand, erases the female experience by treating male patterns as the universal human standard – a tendency known as androcentrism. Androcentrism positions male thinking and behavior as “normal” while rendering female experience invisible or abnormal. The result: research that claims to be about people is often really just about men, with women shoehorned into frameworks that were never designed with them in mind.
The consequences of comparing the sexes
Framing matters enormously. How researchers and the media present findings about sex differences can shape hiring decisions, educational expectations, clinical diagnoses, and public policy. Psychologist Janet Shibley Hyde made this case compellingly with her gender similarities hypothesis (2005), which drew on 46 meta-analyses covering cognitive abilities, communication, personality, and psychological well-being. Her conclusion: 78% of measured gender differences were small or negligible. Men and women were far more alike than popular culture – or alpha-biased psychology – suggested.
A follow-up metasynthesis drawing on 106 meta-analyses confirmed this pattern, finding that the average difference between males and females across psychological domains was relatively small, with the majority of effects classified as either small or very small. Areas like math performance, self-esteem, verbal ability, and helping behavior showed far more overlap between the sexes than difference.
When emphasizing differences harms women
When research and popular discourse fixate on differences, the framing almost always positions women as the group that needs to “catch up.” If boys score higher on some standardized test, the headline rarely reads “boys are outliers.” Instead, the deficit is attributed to girls. This mirrors what happens in workplace settings: when male leadership behavior is treated as the standard, women who lead differently are seen as less effective rather than differently effective. Hyde noted that exaggerated claims of gender differences carry real costs in workplace settings and relationships – costs that fall disproportionately on women.
The same problem appears in medical and psychiatric contexts. Alpha-biased frameworks have historically led clinicians to pathologize normal female behavior – labeling emotional expressiveness as instability, or PMS as a reason to distrust women’s judgment – while treating male behavior as the baseline for mental health.
When minimizing differences also causes harm
Beta bias creates its own set of problems. If researchers treat men and women as interchangeable, they may miss important health disparities. For example, research on minority stress has shown that sexual and gender minority individuals face distinct health risks rooted in discrimination, stigma, and social marginalization – risks that are invisible in frameworks that assume one-size-fits-all findings. Likewise, when clinical drug trials are conducted primarily on male bodies and the findings applied to women, the differences in how women metabolize medication can be missed entirely, leading to under- or over-dosing.
There’s also a subtler cost to erasing difference: it can silence the specific experiences of women. If we collapse all gender into sameness, we risk dismissing valid concerns – about reproductive health, about caregiving burdens, about the structural inequalities that shape women’s lives – as though they don’t exist or don’t matter.
The biopsychosocial model: moving beyond the binary question
The debate over similarities versus differences reveals a deeper problem: framing the question as binary in the first place. The biopsychosocial model offers a more sophisticated alternative. Originally developed by psychiatrist George Engel in 1977, the model holds that biological, psychological, and social factors all interact to shape human behavior and health – and none of these can be fully understood in isolation.
When applied to gender, this model reframes the entire question. Instead of asking “are women naturally more emotional than men?” – a question that assumes a fixed biological answer – the biopsychosocial model asks how biology, personal experience, and social environment together produce the patterns we observe. A girl may grow up in a household where emotional expression is encouraged, in a culture that associates femininity with empathy, and with neurobiological features that may or may not predispose her toward particular emotional responses. Separating these threads and declaring one of them the “true” cause of her behavior is both scientifically inaccurate and practically useless.
Biology is not destiny – but it’s not irrelevant either
Research on cognitive performance offers a useful illustration. Males and females show different average scores on certain cognitive measures – females tend to perform better on memory tasks and reading literacy, while males on average show stronger performance in mental rotation and some spatial tasks. But the biopsychosocial model draws attention to something crucial: these differences are not immutable. Testosterone levels, for example, fluctuate based on social context, such as whether someone wins or loses a competitive game. Some cognitive differences that appear in lab settings shrink or disappear in real-world environments. Biology acts within environments – and environments act on biology.
This is why the biopsychosocial framework replaces the old nature-versus-nurture dichotomy with a continuous feedback loop. Genes are expressed differently in different environments. Social norms shape behavior, which in turn shapes the development of neural pathways and hormonal patterns. Learning is simultaneously biological and environmental. The clean line between “innate” and “learned” turns out not to exist.
Gender as a dynamic, multidimensional process
Within a biopsychosocial framework, gender itself is not a fixed category but a dynamic interplay between biological characteristics, psychological experiences, and social interactions. A person’s gender identity and behavior emerge from all three dimensions simultaneously – which is why identical twins raised in different environments can exhibit different gender expressions, and why gender norms vary so dramatically across cultures and historical periods.
This perspective also makes room for the experiences of people who don’t fit neatly into binary categories. When biological, psychological, and social factors are treated as the full picture – rather than biology alone – it becomes possible to understand gender diversity without treating it as an anomaly or deficiency.
What a balanced approach looks like in practice
Adopting a biopsychosocial perspective doesn’t mean pretending that no differences exist between men and women. It means acknowledging differences where they are real and meaningful, without overgeneralizing, and without treating either sex as a deviation from the other. It means recognizing that observed differences are often smaller than popular belief assumes, heavily context-dependent, and shaped as much by social forces as biological ones. And it means designing research that actually includes women – as full participants, not afterthoughts – and that examines how structural factors like discrimination, caregiving inequality, and cultural expectations shape the outcomes being measured.
The question is not really whether to search for similarities or differences. The question is whether we are willing to look honestly at both, without the distorting lenses of alpha or beta bias – and to ask what forces, biological or otherwise, produced the patterns we find.
