Every day, before you say a single word, your body is already communicating. A smile held a beat too long, a glance that lingers, the way someone leans in or takes up space – these signals shape how we’re perceived and how we connect. Research consistently shows that men and women tend to differ in how they send and receive these non-verbal cues, and understanding those differences can shed real light on why miscommunication between genders happens so often.

What non-verbal communication actually is
Non-verbal communication covers everything that isn’t spoken: facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, touch, posture, and the use of physical space. Anthropologist Edward T. Hall, who pioneered the study of how humans use space (proxemics), argued that these unspoken signals are deeply embedded in culture and social learning – not just instinct. When we layer gender onto this, the patterns become even more revealing.
It’s important to note from the outset that gender differences in non-verbal behavior are tendencies, not fixed rules. They reflect what socialization and social expectations have shaped over time, and individuals vary widely. With that framing in mind, here’s what the research shows.
Smiling and gazing: the signals women send more often
One of the most consistently documented gender differences in non-verbal behavior is smiling. Research on adolescents found that girls smiled significantly more often than boys across different social situations. This holds into adulthood. Women tend to use smiling as a social tool – to signal approachability, warmth, and emotional openness. Men smile less overall, and when they do, it tends to carry different social weight.
This difference isn’t trivial. Studies on non-verbal cues have linked smiling to perceived honesty, trustworthiness, and agreeableness. Women who smile frequently are often read as more likable and emotionally available. At the same time, that same behavior can work against them in professional settings, where constant smiling can undermine perceptions of authority or seriousness.
Eye contact and what it signals differently by gender
Eye contact is another area where gendered patterns show up clearly – but the meaning behind the behavior differs significantly. Research on communication styles shows that women typically use more direct eye contact to build connection and signal that they’re engaged in a conversation. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to use eye contact as a challenge – a show of dominance or position.
This distinction matters because the same behavior gets interpreted differently depending on context. A woman maintaining steady eye contact during a conversation is usually read as attentive. A man doing the same thing may be perceived as asserting authority. These aren’t just cultural assumptions; they reflect how eye contact functions within broader patterns of gendered power and social expectation.
Interestingly, a Northern Illinois University study on mixed-gender group interactions found that women actually displayed more nodding and less direct eye contact than men in certain group settings, suggesting that context – especially group composition and status dynamics – can shift these patterns considerably.
Decoding and encoding emotions: who reads the room better?
Harvard psychologist Robert Rosenthal’s research, widely cited in gender communication literature, found that most men perform below women at both reading (decoding) and sending (encoding) non-verbal emotional cues. This gap in emotional attunement has real consequences in everyday interactions.
Women’s advantage in decoding emotions appears to be cross-cultural. A cross-cultural study comparing Italian and Iranian participants found that women in both groups received higher scores than men in non-verbal decoding accuracy – with cultural background also influencing overall performance. This suggests that while socialization plays a major role, women’s greater sensitivity to emotional cues may be reinforced across different cultural contexts.
Encoding: how women express emotions non-verbally
Women don’t just read emotional cues better – they also send them more richly. Research on non-verbal behavior shows that women use more facial expressions overall, including head nodding and a wider range of reactive expressions. Men, by comparison, tend to use fewer facial expressions and maintain more controlled, “masked” expressions – particularly in professional or public settings.
This masking behavior in men is itself a learned non-verbal strategy. Research in corporate communication has noted that men learn to control their facial expressions and vocal tone as a way of projecting authority. Too much expressiveness is seen as giving away power. For women, the opposite pressure applies: emotional expressiveness is expected, and suppressing it can read as cold or aloof.
Women also use paralanguage – the sounds that aren’t words, like “mhm,” “ah,” and “oh,” along with nodding – far more than men. These backchannel responses signal active listening and emotional engagement. To men who don’t use these cues as often, their absence can be misread as indifference; to women, a man’s silence during conversation can feel like disengagement even when he’s paying full attention.
The encoding-decoding gap and its social roots
Why does this gap exist? The explanations are a mix of social learning and biology. From early childhood, girls are socialized to pay closer attention to interpersonal dynamics, to maintain relationships, and to read the emotional temperature of a room. Boys, by contrast, are often socialized toward task-focused, competitive interactions where reading subtle emotional cues is less rewarded. Research published in PMC on body language reading found that gender affects accuracy in emotion recognition, with females showing stronger performance on neutral and hostile emotional expressions – suggesting women are more finely tuned to picking up low-intensity emotional signals.
Biological factors have also been proposed – including differences in brain lateralization and hormonal influences on social cognition – though researchers caution that these are difficult to disentangle from the powerful effects of socialization and cultural expectation.
Touch: connection versus dominance
Touch, or haptics, is one of the most socially loaded forms of non-verbal communication – and gender shapes both how often people touch and what that touch is meant to signal.
Women tend to use touch as a means of building closeness and expressing care. Studies on adolescents found that girls touched each other mutually more often than boys in social situations. This affiliative touch – a hand on the arm, a hug, physical proximity – functions as relational maintenance. It says: I see you, I’m with you, I care.
Men’s use of touch in many social contexts carries different connotations. Touch between men, particularly in professional or public settings, is often used to assert dominance or mark status – a hand on the shoulder, a firm handshake, a pat on the back. These are not necessarily hostile gestures, but they carry a different social function than the connection-oriented touch more common among women. Research on personal space and gender also notes that men may not realize how physically imposing their touch or presence can seem, particularly when women perceive it through a completely different social framework.
This divergence creates real potential for misreading. A touch that a woman intends as warmth may be interpreted by a man as romantic interest. A touch that a man uses as a social gesture of camaraderie may feel to a woman like a power move. Context matters enormously, but so does the gendered lens through which both parties are interpreting what’s happening.
Personal space: who takes up room, and why
The amount of physical space a person claims – through posture, the spread of their limbs, or where they position themselves in a room – is a powerful, largely unconscious signal of status and confidence.
Men, on average, occupy more physical space than women. This shows up in expansive postures (legs spread, arms out), in the tendency to claim shared space like armrests or table surfaces, and in how men position themselves in group settings. Research on workplace non-verbal behavior observes that social expectations position men to be “large” – physically imposing presence is associated with authority and respect in many cultural contexts. Women, by contrast, are often socialized to make themselves smaller – to cross their legs, keep their elbows in, and take up less room.
EBSCO’s research overview on proxemics notes that high-status individuals are generally awarded more space, and that women are more comfortable standing near other women than men are near other men – a difference that reflects both social comfort and internalized gender norms about proximity and safety.
How personal space norms lead to miscommunication
Because men and women often operate with different personal space expectations, the potential for misreading is significant. Research on college students found that men and women perceive the invasion of their personal space differently, and that men may not recognize how threatening their physical presence can seem in certain contexts. A man standing close to someone during conversation may simply be following his personal proximity norms; the other person – particularly a woman – may experience it as intimidating or inappropriate.
These aren’t just interpersonal inconveniences. In professional environments, the way someone uses space signals confidence, authority, and credibility. Research consistently shows that expanding into space is read as powerful, while contracting is read as submissive. When women are socialized to take up less space, they may inadvertently signal lower status even when their verbal content is authoritative. This is part of what researchers refer to as the credibility gap – the disconnect between what a woman says and how her non-verbal presentation is read.
Are these differences fixed?
It’s essential to recognize that the gender differences discussed here are patterns shaped primarily by socialization, not biological inevitability. Boys and girls are raised with distinct behavioral expectations, and those expectations get reinforced daily through feedback, observation, and social reward. Research on non-verbal communication and culture makes clear that most gender differences in non-verbal behavior are amplifications of broader social norms onto which particular meanings have been imposed.
That means these patterns can shift – and they already are shifting in many contexts. As gender roles evolve, and as more people become conscious of how non-verbal behavior signals power, the way people use smiling, touch, space, and gaze is changing too. The goal isn’t to erase difference but to understand it clearly enough to communicate more intentionally and equitably.
