Why do men and women sometimes think, behave, or communicate differently? Is it written into their biology, or is it something they learn from the world around them? This question has occupied psychologists, neuroscientists, and sociologists for over a century. The answer, as it turns out, is never simple. Theories of sex and gender-related differences draw from multiple disciplines – from evolutionary biology and hormonal research to social learning and intersectional frameworks – each offering a distinct but incomplete picture. Understanding these theories together gives us the most honest view of how gender differences emerge, persist, and change.

The biological perspective on gender differences
Biological theories begin with the premise that some psychological differences between males and females are rooted in evolution, genetics, and hormones. According to Simply Psychology, the chromosomal difference between males (XY) and females (XX) leads to the development of different reproductive organs, which in turn produce different hormones – primarily testosterone in males and estrogen and progesterone in females. These hormones drive not only physical development but also influence behavior.
Evolutionary explanations
Evolutionary psychology argues that many psychological sex differences reflect adaptations developed during our hunter-gatherer past. LibreTexts describes sexual strategies theory as one key framework here: it proposes that males and females evolved different mating strategies due to asymmetries in reproductive investment. Females, who invest more in gestation and childrearing, evolved to be more selective in mate choice; males, who produce abundant sperm, evolved tendencies toward broader mate-seeking. These evolved differences, the theory holds, ripple into psychological traits and social behaviors we observe today.
But this view is not without criticism. APA Division 51 notes that evolutionary psychology has struggled to adequately rule out sociocultural explanations for the very behaviors it attributes to evolution. For instance, while men tend to express aggression physically more often than women, women are equally aggressive relationally – through verbal and social means. This pattern fits cultural learning at least as well as it fits evolutionary theory. There is also the risk that biological framing becomes a convenient excuse for harmful behavior, collapsing complex social dynamics into a “boys will be boys” narrative.
Hormones and brain organization
Beyond evolution, researchers have examined how prenatal hormone exposure shapes the brain. The organizational-activational theory holds that hormones first organize the developing brain during fetal development, then activate gender-linked behaviors later in life when hormone levels rise again at puberty. Research covered by NCBI/PMC indicates that early hormonal environments do appear to influence certain aspects of gender development, though adult hormone levels do not seem to alter established gender identity.
Importantly, research on brain features and gender consistently finds that most humans have a mosaic of traits – some more common in males, some in females, many shared by both – rather than two clearly distinct brain types. The overall conclusion from neuroscience is that human males and females are more psychologically similar than different, even if meaningful average differences exist in some domains.
A critical limitation of purely biological accounts is that they risk biological determinism – the assumption that biology fixes behavior with little room for change. As a review in PMC highlights, evolutionary psychology has often failed to identify the specific genes or biochemical mechanisms that actually link evolution to observed behavioral patterns, making many such claims difficult to test or falsify.
Social development and constructivist views
If biological theories ask what nature contributes to gender differences, social and constructivist theories ask what nurture builds on top of – or instead of – that biological foundation. The consensus here is significant: much of what we recognize as gendered behavior is learned.
Bandura’s social learning theory
Social Learning Theory (SLT), developed by Albert Bandura, explains gender development through observation, imitation, and reinforcement. According to Vaia, children observe how people around them behave, note what behaviors are rewarded or punished, and adjust their own behavior accordingly. A boy who watches his father praised for assertiveness learns to associate assertiveness with masculinity. A girl whose nurturing behavior is consistently rewarded begins to internalize that behavior as part of her identity.
Bandura’s famous Bobo Doll Experiment demonstrated this powerfully. Children who watched an adult behave aggressively toward an inflatable toy were far more likely to replicate that aggression themselves – even adding their own variations, showing that they had not merely copied but genuinely learned the behavior. Notably, boys were more likely to imitate same-sex models, a finding with direct implications for how gender-typed behaviors spread through social environments.
PMC research on gendered family processes confirms that parents create highly gendered environments for children through their choices of toys, clothes, activities, and media – a process called “channeling” – and that children tend to model behaviors from same-gender figures in their environment. Bandura’s later refinement, Social Cognitive Theory, acknowledged that children are not simply passive recipients of social messages. They actively attend to, retain, reproduce, and are motivated by observed behavior – a four-step process that makes them agents in their own gender development, not just products of it.
SLT is not without limits. It struggles to explain why children raised in single-parent or same-sex parent households still develop stable gender identities consistent with those of peers raised in more traditional family structures. It also relies heavily on older studies from the 1960s-80s whose applicability to contemporary, media-saturated social environments may be limited.
Gender schema theory
Gender Schema Theory, developed by Sandra Bem, adds a cognitive dimension that SLT alone doesn’t capture. Where social learning focuses on behavior shaped by external reinforcement, gender schema theory proposes that children actively build mental frameworks – or schemas – about what gender means, and then use these schemas to filter and organize information from the world around them.
As explained by OpenLearn, even young children with relatively simple gender schemas – linking certain toys with boys and others with girls – already use these schemas to guide their own behavior and expectations of others. Importantly, gender schema theory holds that children actively seek out information consistent with their existing schema, meaning they are not merely responding to external cues but are internally motivated to maintain gender-consistent self-concepts. This can lead to gender stereotyping as a natural cognitive byproduct of how human categorization works.
Together, SLT and gender schema theory reveal a feedback loop: social environments create models and reinforce gender norms, children observe and internalize these patterns into cognitive schemas, and those schemas then guide future behavior and interpretation – reinforcing the very norms that shaped them in the first place.
Intersectionality in gender socialization
Both biological and social learning theories, taken alone, describe gender as though it operates the same way for everyone. But real human experience is far more complicated. Intersectionality is the framework that captures this complexity by examining how gender does not exist in isolation from other aspects of identity.
What intersectionality actually means
Legal scholar Kimberlรฉ Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality” in 1989 to address a gap she observed in both feminist and anti-racist scholarship: neither movement adequately captured the experiences of Black women, because each focused on a single axis of identity. Crenshaw’s insight was that race, gender, class, and other identity categories do not simply add on top of each other – they interact to create qualitatively distinct experiences of advantage or disadvantage that cannot be understood by analyzing any one category in isolation.
As Crenshaw herself noted in a Columbia Law School interview, the problem with treating race, gender, and class as separate issues is that this framework erases what happens to people who are subject to all of them simultaneously. A Black woman’s experience of workplace discrimination, for example, is not simply the experience of being Black plus the experience of being a woman. It is a third, distinct experience that cannot be reduced to either.
How intersectionality shapes gender socialization
When applied to gender socialization, intersectionality forces us to ask: whose experience of gender are we describing? Social learning theory might describe how girls are socialized into nurturing roles – but this socialization process looks different for a white middle-class girl in a suburban school than for a low-income Dalit girl in rural India, or for a Black girl in an urban U.S. context shaped by racial stereotypes that actively contradict traditional femininity norms.
Britannica’s overview of intersectionality notes that the framework has since expanded beyond race and gender to include socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, disability, age, and other dimensions of identity – all of which interact with gender to shape socialization in unique ways. A working-class boy’s understanding of masculinity may be deeply tied to physical labor and provider roles, while an upper-class boy is socialized into a masculinity defined more by professional achievement and social authority. Class, in this way, does not just influence access to resources – it shapes the very content of gender norms children are taught to internalize.
From an intersectional perspective, gender schemas are not universal. They are built from the specific social environments children inhabit – environments shaped by race, class, religion, nationality, and disability status, among other things. This means the same “gender socialization process” described by Bandura or Bem plays out differently depending on who the child is and what social world they occupy. Recognizing this is not merely an academic point – it has real consequences for education, healthcare, and policy, where one-size-fits-all approaches to gender often leave multiply-marginalized individuals invisible.
Why no single theory is enough
Each of the three theoretical perspectives discussed here captures something real. Biology tells us that hormones and evolutionary pressures have shaped some of the raw material of human psychology. Social learning theory shows us that these raw materials are dramatically shaped by the environments children grow up in. Gender schema theory reveals that children actively participate in their own gender development through cognitive structures. And intersectionality reminds us that all of this unfolds differently depending on who a person is across multiple dimensions of identity simultaneously.
The most accurate account of gender differences – and the one most consistent with contemporary psychological research – is not one that selects a single framework and declares it correct, but one that holds all these perspectives in productive tension. Bandura’s own social cognitive theory of gender development recognized this, integrating both psychological and sociostructural determinants rather than treating them as competing explanations. Human evolution, he argued, provides biological potentialities – but culture shapes which of those potentialities actually develop, and how.
Gender differences are real in some respects and socially constructed in others. They are shaped by bodies, by families, by culture, by cognitive processes, and by the specific intersections of race, class, and other identities that define each person’s social world. Any theory that ignores one of these dimensions will always give us an incomplete – and potentially misleading – picture of why men and women sometimes differ.
