Most students have experienced the frustration of sitting down to study and feeling like nothing is sticking – reading the same paragraph twice and still not being able to explain what it said. The problem usually isn’t a lack of intelligence or effort. It’s the absence of effective study skills. Study skills are the strategies and techniques that help learners take in, process, and recall information more efficiently. They’re not just academic habits – they’re tools that fundamentally change how well your brain encodes and retrieves knowledge.

What are study skills?

Study skills are often described as study strategies or academic skills – a set of transferable, learnable techniques that help students acquire knowledge, improve comprehension, and perform better academically. They cover everything from how you read a textbook to how you organize your notes to how you test yourself before an exam.

Importantly, study skills are not a fixed set of rules that work the same for everyone. Because learners have diverse learning needs, what works effectively for one student may not work as well for another – which is why developing a personal, adaptable set of strategies matters more than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

According to scholars Burns and Sinfield, learning is a dynamic, cyclic process in which learners interact with ideas, peers, and educators through acquiring, recording, organizing, comprehending, retaining, and applying new information. Study skills are what structure that cycle and make it productive.

The three core categories of study skills

Study skills can be grouped into three primary categories based on the stage of the learning process they support: gathering skills, storing skills, and retrieval skills. Each category addresses a distinct phase of how we learn and remember information, and all three work together as part of a complete learning system.

Gathering skills: taking in information effectively

Gathering skills are the techniques learners use to collect and absorb information from sources – lectures, textbooks, articles, and other materials. This is the entry point of the learning process, and doing it poorly means everything downstream suffers.

The most foundational gathering skill is active reading. Rather than passively moving eyes across a page, active reading involves annotating, highlighting key points, and asking questions about the material. Effective reading allows students to absorb and understand complex materials – from textbooks and research articles to lecture notes and case studies – and is essential for class participation, assignments, and exams.

Note-taking is another critical gathering skill. Good notes don’t mean transcribing everything a lecturer says word for word. They mean capturing the main ideas, key terms, and the relationships between concepts in a form you can return to later. Research on university students has found that skills including note-taking and reading comprehension are statistically linked to higher grade point averages, reinforcing just how much the quality of information intake influences academic outcomes.

Other gathering skills include research skills – knowing where to look for credible information and how to evaluate sources – and listening skills during lectures or group discussions. The goal of all gathering skills is the same: to ensure that the information entering your mind is accurate, organized, and meaningful enough to be processed further.

Storing skills: processing and organizing information

Once you’ve gathered information, you need to store it in a way that makes it accessible later. Storing skills are the strategies that help move information from short-term awareness into long-term memory. This is where real learning begins to take hold.

Memory researchers describe three core processes in learning: encoding (perceiving and relating new information to existing knowledge), storing (maintaining it over time), and retrieval (accessing it when needed). Storing skills primarily target the encoding and storage stages, and their effectiveness directly determines how well retrieval will work later.

Some of the most evidence-backed storing techniques include:

Summarizing in your own words. When you close a chapter and write a summary from memory, you’re forcing your brain to reconstruct the information – which deepens encoding. Simply rereading, by contrast, creates a false sense of familiarity without genuine understanding.

Mind mapping and concept mapping. These visual tools help students organize ideas and see the relationships between them. Mind mapping mirrors how the brain stores and retrieves information, making it a particularly efficient way to organize complex material for long-term retention.

Spaced practice. Rather than cramming, spreading out study sessions over time – known as distributed practice – significantly improves how durably information is stored. Research shows that spacing study sessions helps learners retain at least as much, if not more, information over the long term compared to massed study in a single session.

Connecting new information to existing knowledge. Background knowledge is critical for learning – when new material can connect to an existing neural pathway, it embeds more easily in long-term memory. Strategies like concept mapping and think-pair-share exercises activate prior knowledge before introducing new content.

Time management also plays an essential supporting role here. Creating a study schedule, prioritizing tasks, and planning sessions in advance ensures that storing skills can be applied consistently, rather than in desperate last-minute bursts that don’t allow for real processing.

Retrieval skills: recalling what you’ve learned

Gathering and storing information are necessary steps, but neither of them confirms that learning has truly occurred. Retrieval skills – the ability to successfully pull information back out of memory – are what actually cement knowledge and demonstrate understanding.

Retrieval practice is the strategy of recalling facts, concepts, or events from memory in order to enhance learning. The act of retrieving something from your memory strengthens the connections holding it there, making future recall more likely. This is sometimes called the “testing effect,” and decades of cognitive research back it up.

Critically, retrieval practice doesn’t just lead to memorization – it increases understanding. Because students practice using information rather than just re-reading it, they become better at applying knowledge to new situations and novel questions.

Common retrieval skill techniques include:

Practice testing and self-quizzing. Using practice questions, old exams, or self-generated questions to test your recall without looking at notes. Retrieval practice involves recreating something you’ve learned from memory – and the act of bringing information to mind on your own, once it starts to get a little harder to remember, is what makes the technique effective.

Flashcards used correctly. Flashcards are a classic retrieval tool, but only when used properly. Students should attempt to retrieve the answer before flipping the card. Research shows that a fact should be successfully retrieved approximately three times before a student moves on from it – dropping a card too early reduces the benefit.

Spaced retrieval. Combining retrieval with spacing produces even stronger results. Retrieving stored information at regular intervals encodes learning far more durably than a single review session. The brief forgetting that happens between sessions is actually beneficial – it makes the act of retrieval more effortful and, therefore, more effective at reinforcing the memory.

Metacognitive awareness. A key benefit of retrieval practice is that it helps students identify gaps in their own knowledge. Retrieval not only improves learning and helps learners figure out what they do know – more importantly, it helps them figure out what they don’t know. This self-awareness allows students to direct their study time more precisely.

Why study skills matter for academic success

The evidence connecting study skills to academic performance is both consistent and compelling. A study of university students found that those with higher grade point averages scored significantly higher across all seven measured study skill areas, including time management, concentration, note-taking, test strategies, and reading comprehension. The conclusion was clear: teaching study skills plays an important role in improving students’ academic outcomes.

Study skills also have a direct impact on comprehension – not just grades. Students equipped with strong study skills are more likely to achieve higher grades and successfully complete their studies, because they’re learning to understand material deeply rather than surface-skimming it for short-term recall.

Beyond academics, research highlights that academic skills development plays a crucial role in student wellbeing and mental health. Students who lack effective time management, information literacy, and self-regulated learning strategies can quickly feel overwhelmed, leading to anxiety and burnout. By contrast, students with solid study skills are better equipped to manage their workloads with confidence.

The long-term benefits of mastering study skills extend beyond academic performance, contributing to better workplace adaptability and lifelong learning. The ability to gather information efficiently, organize and store it meaningfully, and retrieve it on demand are skills that carry well past graduation and into professional life.

Study skills can be learned – at any stage

One of the most important things to understand about study skills is that they are not innate abilities. They are learnable, improvable, and applicable across every level of education. Regardless of a learner’s background or style, research shows that the ability to develop and apply study skills is beneficial throughout one’s life, and students may begin developing these skills at any age.

This means that whether you’re a first-year student trying to navigate a new academic environment, a returning adult learner, or someone building professional skills – it’s never too late to examine how you study and make meaningful improvements. The three-part framework of gathering, storing, and retrieval gives every learner a clear structure to start from.

Educators, too, have a responsibility in this area. It’s not enough to simply teach content – it is the responsibility of educators to facilitate the development of study skills for students to succeed throughout the entirety of their educational careers. When students are explicitly taught how to learn, not just what to learn, the results are measurably better.
