Every time you sit down to study or work on a research project, you’re doing more than just reading – you’re gathering information. But gathering information well is a skill in itself. Without the right tools and techniques, you can spend hours reading without retaining what matters, or collect piles of notes that don’t actually serve your goal. Mastering gathering skills means knowing where to look, how to read efficiently, and how to keep only what’s relevant. This post breaks down three core areas: reference tools, reading strategies (skimming and scanning), and organizational skills.

Before you can gather information, you need to know where to find it. Reference tools are your starting point. They don’t replace deep research, but they orient you – giving you definitions, terminology, and background knowledge before you dive into primary or secondary sources.

Gathering information is only half the work. The other half is deciding what to keep, what to discard, and how to structure what remains so it actually serves your study or research goals. Without organizational skills, even excellent gathered material becomes a chaotic pile that’s hard to use.

The single most important organizational step happens before you even open a book or article: define your research objective.
