Our planet’s most precious ecosystems are vanishing. In certain regions around the world, concentrations of unique species are disappearing at alarming rates due to human activity. These critical areas, known as biodiversity hotspots, represent both the richness of life on Earth and the urgent need to protect it. Understanding what makes these regions special and why they matter is essential to global conservation efforts.

What are biodiversity hotspots?
The term biodiversity hotspot was introduced by British ecologist Norman Myers in 1988 to identify regions where exceptional biological diversity meets severe habitat destruction. These are not simply areas with many species-they are places where life exists nowhere else on Earth and where that life is under immediate threat.
To qualify as a biodiversity hotspot, a region must meet two strict criteria. First, it must contain at least 1,500 species of vascular plants as endemics, meaning these species exist naturally in that region and nowhere else on the planet. This threshold represents more than 0.5% of the world’s total plant species. Second, the region must have lost at least 70% of its original natural vegetation. In other words, it must retain 30% or less of its primary habitat.
These criteria highlight a sobering reality. Biodiversity hotspots are places where extraordinary biological wealth has been pushed to the brink. Some hotspots far exceed the minimum requirements-regions like Sundaland in Southeast Asia and the Tropical Andes in South America harbor about 15,000 endemic plant species each, while certain hotspots have lost a staggering 95% of their original vegetation.
Why endemism matters
Endemic species are the irreplaceable foundation of biodiversity hotspots. These organisms have evolved in isolation over millions of years, adapting to specific environmental conditions found only in their native regions. When their habitat disappears, these species have nowhere else to go. This is what makes hotspots so critical-they are the last refuge for thousands of species that exist nowhere else on Earth.
Currently, 36 recognized biodiversity hotspots exist worldwide. Despite covering just 2.5% of Earth’s land surface, these hotspots support more than half of the world’s plant species as endemics and nearly 43% of bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species as endemics. This concentration of life makes hotspots among the most biologically valuable real estate on the planet.
Global and Indian hotspots
Biodiversity hotspots are distributed across the planet, but many are concentrated in tropical regions where climate and geography have fostered exceptional diversity. These areas often feature complex topography, varied microclimates, and evolutionary isolation that together create conditions for high endemism.
India, despite occupying only 2.4% of the world’s land area, is home to four of the 36 global biodiversity hotspots. This remarkable concentration reflects the country’s diverse geography, ranging from towering mountain ranges to tropical coastlines, and positions India as one of 17 megadiverse nations recognized globally.
The Himalayas
The Himalayan hotspot spans over 750,000 square kilometers across multiple countries, including several Indian states such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and parts of northeastern India. The dramatic elevation gradient-from below 500 meters to over 8,000 meters-creates diverse ecosystems ranging from alluvial grasslands and subtropical forests at lower elevations to alpine meadows at higher altitudes.
This hotspot harbors approximately 10,000 plant species, with about 3,160 being endemic. The region is home to iconic large mammals including snow leopards, red pandas, Asian elephants, and one-horned rhinoceroses. However, the Himalayas face severe threats from deforestation, agricultural expansion, illegal logging, and climate change, which is causing glacial retreat and altering fragile alpine ecosystems.
Indo-Burma region
The Indo-Burma hotspot extends across more than 2 million square kilometers, covering northeastern India (including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura) as well as parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and southern China. This region is characterized by lush tropical forests, extensive river systems, and exceptionally high vertebrate diversity.
Remarkably, six large mammal species have been discovered in this hotspot in just the last few decades, including the saola, large-antlered muntjac, and leaf deer. The region is also known for its endemic freshwater turtle species, many of which face extinction due to over-harvesting and habitat loss. Commercial timber exploitation, dam construction, and conversion of wetlands for aquaculture pose major threats to this hotspot’s biodiversity.
Western Ghats and Sri Lanka
The Western Ghats form a mountain chain stretching approximately 1,600 kilometers along India’s western coast, from Gujarat in the north to Kerala in the south. This UNESCO World Heritage Site covers an area of about 160,000 square kilometers and is separated from Sri Lanka’s central highlands by just the Palk Strait, yet both regions share the same hotspot designation due to their similar biogeographic history.
The Western Ghats are home to over 7,400 plant species with 24 endemic genera, along with extraordinary animal diversity including 508 bird species (29 endemic), 227 reptile species (107 endemic), and 131 amphibian species (114 endemic). This hotspot also supports 30% of Asia’s elephant population and 17% of the world’s tiger population. Despite their protected status, the Western Ghats face pressure from agricultural expansion, mining, and infrastructure development.
Sundaland (Nicobar Islands)
The Sundaland hotspot encompasses the western half of the Indonesian archipelago, including around 17,000 islands spanning Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia. In India, this hotspot is represented by the Nicobar group of islands in the Bay of Bengal, which were declared a World Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations in 2013.
Sundaland is one of the biologically richest hotspots globally, harboring approximately 25,000 species of vascular plants, of which 15,000 are found nowhere else. The region supports unique island ecosystems with high levels of endemism in both terrestrial and marine environments. However, explosive growth in industrial forestry, production of palm oil and rubber, and illegal wildlife trade threaten the survival of species like the Sumatran tiger, orangutan, and various endemic plants found in these islands.
Importance of hotspots for conservation
Biodiversity hotspots are not merely scientific classifications-they are strategic priorities for conservation investment. With limited funding available for environmental protection globally, focusing resources on areas where the greatest diversity is under the most severe threat maximizes conservation impact.
Ecosystem services for human survival
The 36 biodiversity hotspots are home to around 2 billion people, including some of the world’s poorest communities who rely directly on healthy ecosystems for their survival. These regions provide crucial ecosystem services such as clean water provision, climate regulation through carbon storage, pollination of crops, and prevention of soil erosion.
Despite covering only 2.5% of Earth’s land surface, the forests, wetlands, and other ecosystems in hotspots account for an estimated 35% of the ecosystem services that vulnerable human populations depend upon. The loss of these services would have catastrophic consequences not just for local communities but for global climate stability and food security.
Irreplaceable genetic diversity
Each endemic species in a biodiversity hotspot represents millions of years of evolutionary history and adaptation. This genetic diversity is irreplaceable. Once lost, it cannot be recreated. These species may hold solutions to future challenges-from disease-resistant crop varieties to pharmaceutical compounds that could treat human ailments. Conservation of hotspots is essentially preservation of options for humanity’s future.
Climate change resilience
Biodiversity hotspots play a critical role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Intact forests in these regions act as massive carbon sinks, storing carbon that would otherwise contribute to atmospheric warming. Additionally, diverse ecosystems are generally more resilient to environmental changes. Protecting hotspots helps maintain this resilience, giving both human and natural communities better chances of adapting to rapidly changing climatic conditions.
The urgency of action
The window for protecting biodiversity hotspots is rapidly closing. With habitat loss accelerating and climate change intensifying, many species in these regions are approaching irreversible tipping points. Some hotspots have already lost 95% of their original vegetation. Further degradation could trigger cascading extinctions that would fundamentally alter these ecosystems forever.
Conservation efforts in hotspots require coordinated action at multiple levels-from international funding and policy frameworks to community-based conservation initiatives and sustainable development practices. India’s hotspots face particular challenges given high population densities, development pressures, and the need to balance conservation with legitimate human needs for resources and economic growth.
Protected areas, wildlife corridors, restoration projects, and sustainable livelihood programs all play vital roles. However, the most critical element is recognizing that biodiversity conservation is not separate from human welfare-it is fundamental to it. The species and ecosystems in these hotspots provide the life-support systems that human civilization depends upon.
