As our world becomes increasingly crowded, humans and wildlife are competing for the same resources more than ever before. This competition has led to a growing problem that affects communities, conservation efforts, and wildlife populations around the globe. When encounters between humans and wild animals result in negative outcomes for both parties, we call this human-wildlife conflict. This issue threatens not only the survival of iconic species like elephants and tigers, but also the livelihoods and safety of millions of people living near wildlife habitats.

What is human-wildlife conflict?

Human-wildlife conflict occurs when encounters between humans and wildlife lead to negative results, such as loss of property, livelihoods, and even life. The consequences extend far beyond these immediate impacts. Crop destruction, livestock predation, damage to infrastructure, and competition for water and grazing lands are common problems. In the worst cases, these interactions can result in injury or death for both humans and animals.

What makes this issue particularly complex is that it involves not just the interactions between people and wildlife, but also disagreements between different groups of people about how to resolve these situations. These conflicts are becoming more frequent, serious and widespread as human populations grow, agricultural land expands, infrastructure develops, and climate change alters habitats. According to a global survey conducted by the World Bank, the most frequently identified conflict species include birds, herbivores like deer and hippos, elephants, large carnivores, primates, and crocodiles.

The widespread impact of selective hunting and poaching

One of the most devastating forms of human-wildlife interaction is selective hunting and poaching, which targets specific species for their valuable body parts. This selective destruction has pushed numerous species toward extinction and altered ecosystems in profound ways.

The elephant ivory crisis

Elephant poaching has drastically reduced populations, with estimates suggesting that African elephant numbers have fallen from around 12 million a century ago to approximately 415,000 today. Between 2006 and 2015 alone, more than 100,000 African elephants were killed, primarily for their ivory tusks. The impact extends beyond population numbers. Intense poaching has begun to alter elephant genetics, as individuals with smaller tusks or no tusks are more likely to survive and pass on these traits. This artificial selection process threatens the long-term survival of the species, since elephants evolved their tusks as essential tools for survival.

Tigers on the brink

The situation for tigers is equally dire. In the 1920s, tiger populations in Asia were estimated at more than 100,000, but within less than a century, they declined to fewer than 3,200. Tigers have lost 95% of their historical range due to human activity, development, and hunting. They are killed for their fur, meat, and bones, which are used in traditional medicine despite having no proven medicinal value. By 1992, the illegal trade industry paid approximately $12.4 million for 200 tigers harvested by poachers, demonstrating the economic incentives driving this destruction.

Broader ecosystem consequences

When keystone species like elephants and tigers are removed from ecosystems, the effects ripple outward. Elephants play crucial roles in forest and savanna ecosystems by dispersing seeds and creating water holes. Their decline leads to overgrowth of vegetation and reduced water availability, impacting other species. Similarly, the loss of predators like tigers disrupts food chains, leading to overpopulation of prey species and subsequent habitat degradation.

Pesticides and their toll on wildlife

While poaching represents a direct threat to wildlife, pesticide use poses a more insidious danger, particularly to pollinators that are essential for both natural ecosystems and agricultural production.

The pollinator crisis

Research has found that the increase in neonicotinoid and pyrethroid use is a major driver of changes in occupancy across hundreds of wild bee species. A comprehensive study examining more than 200,000 observations of over 1,000 bee species found that bee populations have declined some 43% in areas with high pesticide use. These chemicals affect bees in multiple ways, from direct contact during application to residual contact when pollinators visit previously treated flowers.

How pesticides harm pollinators

Pesticide contamination is widespread, with more than 90% of pollen samples from bee hives in agricultural landscapes contaminated with more than one pesticide. The effects go beyond immediate mortality. Pesticides cause subtle but concerning impacts on reproduction, navigation, memory, and learning abilities. These sublethal effects can compound other stressors on pollinator populations, such as habitat loss, pathogens, and poor nutrition.

The economic implications are staggering. Pollinators contribute to one-third of the world’s food-crop production, and their services were valued at $29 billion in the United States alone in 2010. Beyond honeybees, North America is home to approximately 4,000 species of native bees, many of which are more effective pollinators than domesticated honeybees for certain crops. The decline of these species threatens both wild ecosystems and agricultural productivity.

Managing and mitigating human-wildlife conflict

While human-wildlife conflict will continue to exist as our world becomes more crowded, effective, well-planned management and holistic approaches can reduce and minimize conflict in the long term. The key is moving from reactive, piecemeal solutions to integrated strategies that address underlying causes.

Habitat management strategies

Numerous approaches can be taken to reduce damage, de-escalate tensions, and develop sustainable solutions. Physical barriers like fences, nets, and trenches can prevent wildlife from accessing crops and livestock. Early-warning systems and guarding methods alert communities to approaching animals. Deterrents such as sirens, lights, and even beehive fences have proven effective in specific contexts, particularly for deterring elephants from farmland.

However, these technical solutions alone are insufficient. Research shows that measures implemented without consultative, collaborative processes with stakeholders often have limited success. Each conflict situation has unique ecological, cultural, social, historical, and economic characteristics that must be considered. Actions that ignore wider social and local contexts can lead to unintended consequences and increased tensions.

Sustainable use and community engagement

The most successful approaches place community empowerment at the center of conflict resolution. When local communities are fully engaged in planning and implementation, sustainable solutions emerge. Compensation schemes, insurance programs, and income diversification strategies can transform wildlife from a liability into an economic asset through sustainable tourism and conservation-related employment.

For example, communities living near wildlife can develop alternative revenue streams that reduce their dependence on activities that bring them into conflict with animals. When people derive economic benefits from living alongside wildlife, they become partners in conservation rather than adversaries. This requires addressing the deeper underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, limited livelihood options, and lack of resources.

Policy and integrated approaches

Effective management requires collaboration across disciplines and sectors. Conservation practitioners, community leaders, governments, researchers, businesses, and other stakeholders must work together, bringing expertise in ecology, social psychology, economics, and environmental law. Fewer than 10 countries currently have national strategies focusing on human-wildlife conflict, despite its global reach and cross-sector impacts.

The Convention on Biological Diversity has recognized human-wildlife conflict as a global concern, marking the first time it has been explicitly referenced in global biodiversity targets. This reflects growing political attention and understanding that addressing this issue is crucial for achieving harmony between humanity and nature.

Moving toward coexistence

Human-wildlife conflict is not just a conservation issue but a development and humanitarian concern that affects food security, poverty, and sustainable development globally. The challenges are significant, but solutions exist when we approach the problem holistically and include affected communities as equal participants in developing strategies.

By combining scientific research, traditional knowledge, community empowerment, and appropriate technology, we can create landscapes where humans and wildlife coexist. This requires adequate resources, political will, and recognition that the benefits of such coexistence extend to biodiversity, communities, and the global economy. The path forward involves understanding that wildlife and humans have always shared this planet, and with thoughtful management, we can continue to do so in ways that benefit both.
