India is home to an incredible variety of landscapes, from snow-capped mountains to tropical rainforests, arid deserts to coastal wetlands. To understand and protect this natural wealth, scientists have divided the country into 10 distinct biogeographic zones. This classification, developed by Rodgers and Panwar in 1988, helps conservation planners identify unique ecosystems and protect endangered species across the nation.

Understanding biogeographic zones
A biogeographic zone is a geographic area characterized by specific environmental conditions and distinct assemblages of plants and animals adapted to those conditions. India’s classification into 10 zones, further divided into 27 provinces, was created by the Wildlife Institute of India to support systematic biodiversity conservation. As one of 17 megadiverse nations, India contributes 8% of the world’s known biological diversity despite occupying only 2.4% of global land area.
The 10 biogeographic zones of India
Trans-Himalayan zone
This cold, arid region covers approximately 5.6% of India’s land area and includes Ladakh, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, North Sikkim, and Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. Located at elevations between 2,800 and 7,000 meters, the Trans-Himalaya features sparse alpine steppe vegetation with limited plant life adapted to extreme conditions. The zone supports unique wildlife including snow leopards, Tibetan wild ass, Himalayan marmots, and the migratory black-necked crane. This region harbors the world’s largest populations of wild sheep and goats, with around 700 medicinal plant species adapted to high-altitude life.
Himalayan zone
Constituting about 6.4% of the country’s area, the Himalayan zone stretches across 2,400 kilometers of mountain ranges including Northwest, West, Central, and East Himalayas. This zone showcases remarkable biodiversity with tropical rainforests in the Eastern Himalayas and dense subtropical and alpine forests in the Central and Western regions. Key tree species include oak, chestnut, pine, and deodar. The zone supports diverse wildlife such as red pandas, black bears, leopards, snow leopards, and numerous endemic species. The region hosts over 2,500 medicinal plants and 48 gymnosperm species.
Desert zone
Covering approximately 6.5% of India’s land, this zone comprises the Thar Desert and the Rann of Kutch. The Thar receives less than 70 cm of rainfall annually and experiences extreme temperatures. Vegetation consists mainly of xerophytic plants like babul and wild date palm. The Rann of Kutch, a vast salt marsh, is the only large flooded grasslands zone in the Indo-Malayan region and provides critical habitat for the endangered Indian wild ass. The region hosts around 500 medicinal plant species and supports bird populations including greater flamingos, lesser flamingos, and the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard.
Semi-arid zone
This transitional zone between the desert and denser forests covers about 16.6% of India’s geographical area. Characterized by discontinuous vegetation with thorn forests, the region experiences soil-water deficit throughout the year. The zone supports thorny shrubs, grasses, and bamboo species along with wildlife such as jackals, leopards, and numerous specialized bird species adapted to arid conditions.
Western Ghats zone
Recognized as one of 25 global biodiversity hotspots, the Western Ghats stretch 1,600 kilometers along India’s west coast from Gujarat to Tamil Nadu. This UNESCO World Heritage Site exhibits extraordinary biodiversity with approximately 7,402 flowering plant species, of which 5,588 are endemic. The zone shows remarkable endemism levels with 54% of tree species, 65% of amphibians, 62% of reptiles, and 53% of fish species being endemic. The region hosts at least 325 globally threatened species including iconic mammals like Asian elephants, tigers, lion-tailed macaques, and Nilgiri tahrs. The Western Ghats support 11,000 elephants and maintain crucial watershed functions for peninsular India.
Deccan Plateau zone
As India’s largest biogeographic zone, the Deccan Plateau covers 42% of the country’s land area. This semi-arid region lies in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats and includes states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha. The plateau features varied forest types from moist-deciduous to semi-evergreen forests. The central highlands encompass the Vindhya and Satpura ranges, the Chhota Nagpur Plateau, and Eastern Ghats. Despite degradation in many areas, the zone contains some of India’s best forest resources and supports diverse wildlife in its deciduous forests, thorn woods, and scrublands.
Gangetic Plain zone
The Gangetic Plain extends from the Himalayan foothills to the river delta and represents one of the most densely populated agricultural regions. This alluvial plain supports high population densities with purely agro-based economies in many areas. The region’s forests feature species like teak, sal, shisham, and mahua. The physiogeographic scenery varies from arid landscapes in western Rajasthan to humid delta regions in the east.
Northeast zone
This zone serves as a biodiversity hotspot and biogeographical gateway, forming a meeting point between the Himalayan Mountains and peninsular India. The region transitions between Indian, Indo-Malayan, and Indo-Chinese biogeographical areas, resulting in exceptional species diversity. Northeast India hosts numerous endemic species unique to localized areas, particularly in the Khasi Hills. The zone contains one of India’s three tropical moist evergreen forest zones and showcases high endemism with species restricted to specific regions.
Coastal zone
India’s 7,516-kilometer coastline displays varied characteristics from narrow western stretches to broader eastern plains. The west coast features distinctive backwaters, while the east coast is characterized by extensive deltas of rivers like Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri. Mangrove vegetation thrives in estuarine tracts, providing critical habitat for marine and terrestrial species. The fertile coastal plains support rice cultivation and coconut plantations, serving as important economic zones while maintaining unique coastal ecosystems.
Islands zone
This smallest biogeographic zone covers only 0.3% of India’s land area but exhibits remarkable endemism. The zone comprises two distinct groups: the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands harbor more than 10% of India’s fauna species despite occupying just 0.25% of geographical area. These islands feature tropical evergreen forests with high endemism, over 500 coral species, and unique wildlife including the Narcondam hornbill, saltwater crocodile, and dugong. The islands’ coral reefs support over 1,000 fish species and represent some of India’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems.
Endemic species and conservation priorities
Each biogeographic zone harbors species found nowhere else on Earth. The Western Ghats alone contain approximately 1,273 plant species exclusively confined to the region. The lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri tahr, and Nilgiri langur exist only in specific zones. The Andaman Islands host endemic species like the Andaman wild pig and Nicobar megapode. This concentration of endemic species makes India’s biogeographic zones critical for global biodiversity conservation.
India is home to four biodiversity hotspots that overlap with these zones: the Western Ghats, Eastern Himalaya, Indo-Burma region, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These hotspots face substantial threats from habitat loss, with each estimated to have lost at least 70% of original natural vegetation. Conservation efforts focus on protecting these critical areas through national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and biosphere reserves.
Threats and conservation challenges
India’s biogeographic zones face mounting pressures from human activities. Agricultural expansion, urbanization, infrastructure development, and climate change threaten unique ecosystems across all zones. The Western Ghats suffer from plantation agriculture for tea, coffee, and rubber. The Desert zone experiences overgrazing and habitat degradation. Coastal zones face pollution and unsustainable development. The Islands are vulnerable to rising sea levels and invasive species.
The government has established numerous protected areas including two biosphere reserves, 13 national parks, and multiple wildlife sanctuaries. However, conservation remains challenging due to competing land use demands and population pressures. Successful protection requires balancing human needs with ecosystem preservation while engaging local communities in conservation efforts.
