Every species on Earth contributes something valuable to our planet, whether we realize it or not. Biodiversity provides us with food, clean air, medicines, and countless other benefits that make human life possible. Understanding the different types of value that biodiversity offers helps us appreciate why its conservation matters so urgently. Economists and ecologists classify these benefits into three main categories: direct use values, indirect use values, and non-use values.

Direct use values: resources we physically obtain
Direct use values represent the tangible goods that humans extract directly from ecosystems for consumption or commercial purposes. These are the most visible benefits of biodiversity because we can see, touch, and measure them.
Food sources from biodiversity
Biodiversity forms the foundation of global food security. Just three plant species-wheat, rice, and maize-provide more than two-thirds of the world’s nutritional requirements. Beyond these staple crops, biodiversity provides vegetables, fruits, nuts, and protein sources ranging from fish to livestock. Wild species continue to supply genetic material for developing new crop varieties that resist diseases, tolerate drought, and produce higher yields.
Fish and aquaculture depend entirely on aquatic biodiversity. Through modern aquaculture techniques, fish and fish products have become the largest source of protein globally. Communities around the world rely on wild-caught fish, shellfish, and other marine species for both nutrition and income.
Medicinal resources
Many modern medicines originate from natural sources. Traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine have relied on plants, fungi, and animal products for centuries. Aspirin was developed from compounds found in willow tree bark. The anti-malarial drug artemisinin comes from sweet wormwood plants. Recently, researchers obtained vinblastine and vincristine-two powerful anti-cancer drugs-from periwinkle plants.
The pharmaceutical industry remains heavily dependent on natural compounds. About 75% of the world’s population relies on plant or herbal extracts for medicine. Penicillin, derived from the fungus Penicillium, revolutionized medical treatment as an antibiotic. Scientists hypothesize that many marine animals possess anticancer properties that haven’t been systematically investigated yet.
Timber and raw materials
Forests supply wood for construction, paper production, furniture manufacturing, and fuel. Timber has been fundamental to human civilization for millennia, providing materials for shelter, tools, and energy. Beyond timber, biodiversity provides rubber, plant fibers like cotton and jute, dyes, resins, and numerous other raw materials that support industries worldwide.
Indirect use values: ecosystem services supporting life
Indirect use values represent the ecosystem services that biodiversity provides without being directly consumed. These services include regulating processes like climate control, carbon sequestration, flood prevention, erosion control, and pollination.
Carbon sequestration and climate regulation
Plants, trees, and soil organisms absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and store it in their biomass. This process, known as carbon sequestration, plays a critical role in regulating Earth’s climate. Forests, wetlands, and oceans act as massive carbon sinks, helping to mitigate climate change by removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
When ecosystems are destroyed, stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere, accelerating climate change. Biodiversity plays an important role in climate regulation, carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, provision of clean air and water, and disease regulation. Preserving diverse ecosystems is essential for maintaining the planet’s carbon balance.
Soil formation and fertility
Healthy soils depend on biodiversity. Microorganisms, fungi, earthworms, and plant roots work together to break down organic matter, recycle nutrients, and create fertile soil. Without this biological activity, agriculture would collapse and ecosystems would cease to function properly.
Plant roots stabilize soil and prevent erosion. Soil organisms decompose dead material, releasing essential nutrients back into the soil for future plant growth. The decline in soil biodiversity-including earthworms and beneficial bacteria-has been linked to reduced agricultural productivity and increased vulnerability to pests.
Aesthetic and cultural value
Landscapes rich in biodiversity offer beauty, peace, and mental well-being. People derive joy from nature through activities like hiking, birdwatching, photography, and simply visiting parks. Many cultural practices, festivals, and rituals are deeply connected to nature. Communities worldwide revere specific species or ecosystems as sacred.
Eco-tourism generates significant economic benefits while fostering conservation awareness. Countries like Kenya and Costa Rica have built substantial portions of their economies around protecting biodiversity for tourists who want to witness natural beauty in its original habitat.
Non-use values: intrinsic worth beyond human use
Non-use values reflect the intrinsic worth of biodiversity-values that exist independently of direct human consumption or benefit. These values include existence value, bequest value, and option value.
Existence value
Existence value represents the benefit people derive from simply knowing that biodiversity exists, even if they never use it or experience it directly. Many people feel satisfaction knowing that mountain gorillas roam African forests, coral reefs thrive in tropical oceans, or ancient rainforests continue to exist. This value reflects a sense of moral responsibility toward nature and recognition that species have a right to exist independent of human needs.
Organizations like the World Wildlife Fund receive millions of dollars in donations annually based on this principle. People contribute money to protect species and habitats they will likely never see because they value the mere existence of these natural wonders.
Bequest value
Bequest value involves the satisfaction of preserving biodiversity for future generations. Just as we inherit cultural traditions and resources from our ancestors, we have a responsibility to conserve biodiversity so that our descendants can experience the same benefits we enjoy today. This includes not only tangible resources like food and medicine but also the aesthetic, spiritual, and educational richness that biodiversity provides.
Ensuring that future generations can access diverse ecosystems, witness rare species, and benefit from undiscovered resources motivates conservation efforts worldwide. This value acknowledges our role as temporary stewards of Earth’s biological heritage.
Option value
Option value recognizes the potential future benefits that we may not yet fully understand or use. Many species and ecosystems may have undiscovered applications in medicine, technology, or ecosystem services. By conserving biodiversity now, we preserve the possibility of future innovations that could enhance human well-being and address pressing global challenges.
Scientists have studied only a fraction of Earth’s species for medicinal properties. Vast potential exists to unlock new treatments for diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and antibiotic-resistant infections. Preserving biodiversity ensures we retain access to this invaluable pool of genetic and biological resources for future discoveries.
Why these values matter for conservation
Understanding the multiple values of biodiversity strengthens the case for conservation. Direct use values demonstrate immediate economic benefits. Indirect use values highlight ecosystem services essential for human survival. Non-use values reflect moral and ethical considerations that transcend utilitarian perspectives.
Biodiversity loss affects all these value categories simultaneously. When species go extinct, we lose potential medicines, ecosystem functions deteriorate, food security weakens, and future generations inherit a diminished natural world. Recognizing the full spectrum of biodiversity’s value-from the food on our plates to the simple knowledge that wild places still exist-helps justify conservation investments and policy decisions.
