Why do women, on average, tend to be more selective when choosing partners, while men are more likely to take physical and social risks? Why does empathy appear more frequently in women across many cultures, while competitive aggression surfaces more in men? Evolutionary psychology proposes that these patterns are not accidental – they are the residue of ancient survival pressures shaped over thousands of generations. This framework draws on Darwin’s theory of natural selection to argue that many gendered behaviors we observe today once served clear adaptive functions. Understanding this perspective – along with its very real limitations – is essential for anyone studying the psychology of gender.

Sociobiology and the biological roots of gendered behavior
The evolutionary approach to gender has its intellectual roots in sociobiology, a field that gained major traction after biologist E.O. Wilson published Sociobiology: The New Synthesis in 1975. Building directly on Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, Wilson made a provocative claim: that social behaviors – including many we consider distinctly gendered – have biological foundations shaped by evolution. In his framework, behaviors that increased an organism’s chances of survival and reproduction would, over many generations, become more common in a population. Those that reduced fitness would gradually disappear.
Wilson defined sociobiology as the extension of evolutionary theory to social organization. He argued that rather than social behavior being solely the product of individual psychology or cultural forces, evolution drives behavioral differences in animal populations through genetic influence. This was a significant departure from the prevailing “blank slate” view in the social sciences, which held that behavior was primarily shaped by environment and learning.
Applied to gender, this argument produced some specific – and controversial – claims. Behaviors like female empathy, emotional sensitivity, and nurturing tendencies were framed as traits that evolved because they made mothers more effective caregivers. A woman who could accurately read her infant’s emotional state was more likely to keep that infant alive. Meanwhile, male aggression, competitiveness, and risk-taking were understood as strategies for securing resources, defending territory, and competing for mates. As E.O. Wilson himself put it, the brain has been “programmed to perform as if it knows” the evolutionary logic behind its behavioral tendencies – meaning these drives operate below conscious awareness, not as deliberate survival strategies.
It is important to note that sociobiology does not argue that every individual conforms to these patterns, or that culture plays no role. The claim is about statistical tendencies across populations, shaped by evolutionary pressures that operated over an enormously long stretch of human prehistory.
Parental investment theory: why females invest more
One of the most influential frameworks to emerge from evolutionary approaches to gender is Parental Investment Theory (PIT), developed by biologist Robert Trivers in 1972. Trivers defined parental investment as any investment by a parent in an individual offspring that increases the offspring’s chances of surviving, at the cost of the parent’s ability to invest in other offspring. The central prediction of the theory is straightforward: the sex that invests more in reproduction will be more selective when choosing a mate, while the sex that invests less will compete more aggressively for mating opportunities.
In most species, including humans, females bear a substantially greater reproductive burden. A woman invests months of gestation, the physical toll of childbirth, and typically more time in direct infant care. Her number of potential offspring is also biologically limited. A man, by contrast, produces sperm at a far higher rate and faces a much lower minimum investment per reproductive event. This inequality in reproductive costs, Trivers argued, leads directly to sex differences in mating psychology and behavior across species.
The practical consequences for human behavior, according to evolutionary psychologists, are significant. Because women have more at stake in each reproductive event, natural selection would have favored women who were careful evaluators of potential partners – assessing not just genetic fitness, but also willingness to invest in offspring and capacity to provide resources. Men, facing lower per-event reproductive costs, would be more likely to pursue a higher number of mating opportunities. According to Parental Investment Theory, the sex with greater investment will be more selective when choosing a mate, while the less-invested sex will compete for mating opportunities – a pattern that appears across a wide range of species, from seahorses to humans.
Trivers’ 1972 paper has become one of the most widely cited publications in evolutionary biology, accumulating more than 17,000 scientific citations as of 2022, and remains a foundational reference in evolutionary psychology. Its influence extends to explaining patterns in mate preferences, jealousy, and even parent-offspring conflict.
Sexual selection and gendered behavior patterns
Closely linked to parental investment is Darwin’s theory of sexual selection, which he elaborated in The Descent of Man (1871). Darwin distinguished two mechanisms within sexual selection: intrasexual competition, where members of one sex compete directly with each other for mating access, and intersexual selection, where members of one sex choose among competing members of the other. Both processes, evolutionary psychologists argue, have shaped distinct behavioral tendencies in men and women.
Because men historically had more to gain from competing successfully for status and resources – traits that made them attractive to selective female partners – intrasexual competition is argued to have driven the evolution of male risk-taking, physical aggression, and dominance-seeking behavior. Evolutionary psychology posits that males are driven toward short-term strategies partly because sperm are abundant and renewable while eggs are relatively scarce, making females more discriminating when selecting partners. From this perspective, men who competed effectively for status were more likely to reproduce, gradually passing on genes associated with competitive behavior.
On the female side, intersexual selection is thought to have produced sophisticated social and evaluative abilities. If a woman’s reproductive success depended on accurately assessing a partner’s genetic quality, commitment potential, and resource-holding capacity, then sensitivity to social cues, emotional intelligence, and careful partner assessment would have been strongly favored by selection. This reasoning is often used to explain why women tend to place relatively greater emphasis on long-term stability and resource availability in partners, while men tend to place greater emphasis on physical indicators of fertility and health.
The males-compete/females-choose model applies well across many species, but evolutionary psychologists note that humans are somewhat different: because men in our species commonly contribute to child-rearing, the sex difference in parental investment – and therefore in competitive versus selective behavior – is more modest than in many other animals. Human mating psychology reflects this nuance, with both sexes being selective, though in somewhat different ways.
Criticism of reductionism: the limits of evolutionary explanations
Evolutionary approaches to gender have attracted substantial and serious criticism, and understanding these critiques is as important as understanding the framework itself. The most fundamental objection is that evolutionary psychology is reductionist – that it oversimplifies extraordinarily complex social behaviors by tracing them back to a single set of biological causes.
Critics such as Lickliter and Honeycutt have argued that evolutionary psychology is a predeterministic approach that assumes cognitive and behavioral traits preexist individual development and are merely activated by environmental events, ignoring the deeply interactive nature of biological, social, and developmental processes. They contend that behavior arises from the entire developmental system – including the real, present-day environment an individual inhabits – not just from the ancestral environments evolutionary psychologists reconstruct.
A related concern involves what critics call “just-so stories” – evolutionary explanations that are plausible-sounding but essentially untestable. Since we cannot directly observe ancestral behavior or run controlled experiments on evolutionary history, it is possible to construct convincing narratives for almost any observed gender difference after the fact. As biologist Richard Lewontin argued, there is often no direct evidence for the genetic basis of specific social behaviors, and the historical scenarios used to explain them are fundamentally unverifiable.
Critics also point out that evolutionary psychology has historically struggled to account for behaviors and identities that fall outside its binary male-female framework. A common argument highlights evolutionary psychology’s difficulty explaining behavior that contradicts the sociobiological model – including homosexuality, men who are family-oriented or passive, and women who adopt highly competitive roles. The existence of significant cross-cultural variation in gender roles also challenges the idea that gendered behaviors reflect universal, evolved psychological mechanisms.
Sociologists and feminist scholars have raised an additional concern: that evolutionary accounts of gender can serve an ideological function, presenting existing gender inequalities as natural and therefore inevitable. As critics of sociobiology noted, the field responds to gender inequalities by offering a seemingly scientific model asserting that existing gender norms are natural – a framing that can inadvertently discourage efforts to address those inequalities through social change.
Evolutionary psychologists, for their part, have responded to many of these criticisms. Researchers like Workman and Reader argue that genes do not determine behaviors absolutely but predispose individuals to certain tendencies that are then shaped by culture and individual life history – a position that allows for considerable behavioral flexibility without abandoning the evolutionary framework. Steven Pinker similarly argues that charges of rigid biological determinism are often a misrepresentation of what evolutionary psychologists actually claim.
The most productive current thinking in the field sits at the intersection of biology and culture. Rather than asking whether gendered behavior is biological or social, researchers are increasingly asking how evolutionary predispositions interact with social structures, cultural norms, and individual experience to produce the wide diversity of gender expressions we actually observe. The evolutionary approach offers one genuinely useful lens – but it is one lens among several, not a complete explanation on its own.
